From mark.rauterkus at gmail.com Fri Aug 12 12:31:05 2011 From: mark.rauterkus at gmail.com (Mark Rauterkus) Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2011 12:31:05 -0400 Subject: [412-public-news] Community building via swimming and water polo. Next week, Aug 15 to 19, 11 am in The Hill District Message-ID: Hi All, Help spread the word about water polo next week, Monday through Friday, August 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2011, from 11 am to 12:30 at Ammon Rec Center, a Citiparks, outdoor swim pool. Rookies welcome. No charge. Sign up at the gate. We had a great summer. We had five weeks of swim and water polo that was for Pgh Public School students at Summer Dreamers at Peabody High School. That was closed to the general community, but now we'll try to blend and mix the energy from the kids to the public. Plus, we want to show that there is a demand for more athletics, more swimming, more wellness. If you can drop in, please do so. + + + Open Water Polo practices and games are to happen next week, Monday through Friday, August 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19, 2011, in the city at the Citiparks Ammon Rec Center Swim Pool, an outdoor 50 meter pool with plenty of shallow and deep water. All games and practice times are 11 am to 12:30. A squad of players from North Allegheny and Tiger Water Polo are going to join us for games on Thursday, so we need to have a few practices in advance of their arrival. Players from Shaler, Schenley and of course, the PPS Summer Dreamers who just had five weeks of swimming and water polo are all welcome to attend, bring friends and help to make this a great time. Plenty of teams and even a few subs are desired. It is more fun to have some on the bench to give you a rest, if you need it. Ammon Rec Center in in Pittsburgh's Hill District, on Bedford Ave. Search Bedford Ave on your GPS or Maps.Google.com. Cross street is Kirtpatrick and Memory Lane. Macedonia Baptist Church is next door. Get to Ammon from Downtown Pgh by going on Bedford Ave that runs right next to the Civic Arena past the yellow-brick former school at the top of the hill, Connelley. >From the South Side, take the Birmingham Bridge and go STRAIGHT (not to Oakland nor Downtown) and stay on Kirtpatrick, up and up, until it ends right at the pool. >From the east and north and Strip District, go on Bigelow Blvd to Heron Ave (light). Turn up the hill. Then, turn to Bedford, next light. Bedford is the sharpest turn at the top of a hill at a light that is a five way corner. Coach Mark Rauterkus will lead the sessions, but other coaches and volunteers are welcome too. Adults and off duty lifeguards too. Working guards will be there as well, of course. Players older than 10 are welcome. Swimming skills are helpful, but there is a good bit of shallow water where games, drills and play can be organized too. This is ideal for those in middle school, high school and older. Water polo rookies are welcome. More than 100 kids played five weeks of water polo with Pittsburgh Public Schools Summer Dreamers. They developed game play from scratch and were doing tip shots, pressing defense and nice goalie work. We are sure to have a wide range of abilities and swimming skills attending. No charge. Sign up in advance or just drop in at the pool on any of the days. Rain and storms cancel. Questions: Contact Mark Rauterkus, 412, 298-3432. Mark at Rauterkus.com.
