Macintosh User Group and this AUSOM-Announcement is a brief summary  
of the various meetings we conduct during the month and in the

MEETINGS DAY - Saturday, October 6, 2007
Members and visitors attend Box Hill Institute, Building 8 Elgar  
Campus on the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads (Melway 47B9) on  
the first Saturday of each month (except January) between 9.30am and  
5.00pm for a wide variety of meetings on the use of the Apple  
Macintosh computer in digital photography, iPods, home movies,  
genealogy, finance, databases, the Internet, Excel, Word,  networking  
and many other topics. The location is convenient to tram and train  
and there is ample parking. Lunch may be purchased on site and  
vendors sell small computer items such as CDs, DVDs, ink jet  
cartridges, cables etc. We have a monthly raffle of valuable prizes  
such as iWork software, the iPod shuffle etc.

ALSO NOTE: The meeting has relocated to Building 8 of Box Hill TAFE,  
Elgar Rd Campus
This is the OTHER SIDE of Elgar Rd from where we used to meet and you  
can park inside, or next to, that building, free of charge.

MAIN PRESENTATION - Saturday, October 6, 2007

TOPIC: TOAST 8
Neil Cameron will look at what's new or improved in this version of  
Toast, including the new interface and the Media Browser and the  
steps involved in burning a CD and DVD using Toast. He will  
demonstrate the burning of a small data file and will cover the  
making of an audio CD, burning video and copying a DVD to another disc.

This is part of Meetings Day at the Box Hill Institute (see above)  
and will commence in Rooms 213-215 in Building 8 at 1pm.

MULTIMEDIA SIG - Tuesday, October 9, 2007
Meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Balwyn Baptist Church  
(cnr Whitehorse Road and Parring Rd  Melway 46F8) from 7.30pm to 10pm.

TOPIC:  ZVOX Speaker Systems:
  Perry Liebe has been testing the ZVOX Mini and the ZVOX Loudspeaker  
units over the last couple of months and he'll discuss his  
experiences with them. The Zvox units are revolutionary single- 
cabinet audio systems for use with TVs, iPods and computer systems.  
They combine high-quality speakers, amplifier, a built-in powered sub  
woofer and the ZVOX PhaseCue(tm) virtual surround sound system in an  
all-in-one, easy-to-connect cabinet.

TOPIC: Mac OS X 10.5 - Leopard
We don't know if Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard will have actually shipped by  
the time we meet... either way we'll discuss some of the new features  
to be found in Leopard and preparing to upgrade from either versions  
of the Mac OS X.

RETIREES AND OTHERS SIG - Wednesday, October 10,  2007
Meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Balwyn Baptist Church  
(cnr Whitehorse Road and Parring Rd  Melway 46F8) from 10am to 12noon.

TOPIC: Creating your own Cards
1) Steve Cooper - 'Creating Greeting Cards using Pages'
2) Barbara Gibson - 'Turning Photos into Line Art and ideas for using  
the results
3) If time permits - 'Some Ideas for Embellishing Cards.'


AUSOM COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT MEETINGS
The AUSOM Committee of Management (CoM) usually meets on the  
Wednesday night two weeks before the next Main Meeting (this is  
usually, but not always the the 2nd Wednesday of each month) at 247  
Flinders Lane Melbourne Victoria Australia.

If you'd like to submit information for the Committee's  
consideration, please email com at ausom.net.au or write to; AUSOM  
Committee, 247 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000.  If the submission is  
received by the Monday evening prior to the Committee Meeting, it can  
be placed on the agenda for consideration at that next meeting,  
otherwise it may be held over until the meeting.

DISC OF THE MONTH:
AUSOM regularly produces a Disc of the Month that goes on sale on the  
First Saturday of each month at our Main Meeting.

This month there are TWO discs been released and both focus on Open  
Source Software.
The first CD is "The Ultimate Collection of Open Source Software for  
Mac OS X"
The second is "Software for Starving Students"
Both discs cost $10 each but for the month of October if you purchase  
both together, you can pick them up for only $15 - SAVE $5.  Prices  
include postage if you can't make it to the meetings.
