(M-O-U-S-E, oops! that's April...) I mean the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, at Symphony Hall in Boston. The kids have known about this for a while, but the paperwork was caught in a post-holiday slump (weren't we all?) so the actual permission slips go home from Chorus classes on Monday. The trip is a bargain at $18 including transportation. We meet at CCHS at 5:15, bus leaves at 5:30 to arrive in Boston for the 6:30 lecture and 7:30 rehearsal. We should leave Boston by about 9:30 and be back in Concord at about 10:15pm. This is a fabulous opportunity to see and hear some of the world's best musicians in (arguably) the world's best concert hall for a fraction of the concert ticket price. The lecture at 6:30 is an amazing bonus! If your student is interested, remind them to get a permission slip from Mr. Brown on Monday and return it with a check (payable to CC-POPS) on Tuesday. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Karen Concord Carlisle Chorus Trip Fees At long last, we believe that we know the price for the April 2002 trip to Disneyworld and the North American Music Festival. Unless something else unexpected happens, your students' invoices should reflect the following: $95 registration fee for each traveller $1570 fee for each of those who registered before October 31, 2001 $1620 fee for each those who registered after October 31, 2001 $265 per adult traveller (adult supplement) $x insurance fees optional according to each traveller's predilection The breakfasts and dinners, hotels, train and bus trips, theme park entrance fees, etc. etc. that are included (and we tried to make sure that as much as possible is included in this one fee) can be seen on the CCPOPS website. The amount of money each student for lunches, snacks, tips for the tour guides and bus driver, souvenirs and other miscellaneous costs for each traveller will be estimated in a packet of materials coming to travellers and their parents early in February. Student Traveller Health Forms This is a first reminder that the School District requires that all students travelling on a school-sponsored trip must have a current Health Form/physical on file with the CCHS Nurse's Office. "Current" is defined as a physical dated no earlier than April 23, 2001. If you think your/your student's last physical is dated earlier than that, please check on it and if so, make arrangements to submit an updated health form to the Nurse's Office no later than April 1. If you/your student does not have a current health form on file, you/he/she will not be allowed to participate in the trip. (Sorry -- school district rules.) Questions about the Trip? Call Chuck Brown at 978-318-1417 x 151 or Lucy Miller at 978-371-9632 (after Jan 19th) with questions about the trip. You made all the kids feel special with treats and kept them well-nourished with healthy choices. The kitchen staff provided efficiency and warmth...can you believe how quickly almost one hundred kids can be happily served? This whole endeavor is such a joy because of all your help. We have just a few meals to go and then I will want to do all the accounting. Please get any receipts to me as soon as possible and ABSOLUTELY by March 5th. Please do not be shy about submitting them....everyone paid the same amount and some people really did supply mass quantities! Your 'gift' was the time that it took to prepare such delicious offerings! The kids LOVED the vegetarian minestrone soup, rolls and chicken wings from the Tekle Family; the Hearty Chicken Soup from O'Kelley's; the Chili from Levinstein/Pasha and the crepes from Birkett; Mac & Cheese was gobbled up thanks to Kavanagh, Chateauneuf, McHugh and Armistead; cornbread from Lawson, Armistead, Easter (Curran) and Vienneau was perfect with the chili! All the breakfast snacks, desserts - especially the birthday cakes - and salad/veggies were appreciated. Any pans. dishes, etc. should be found in Mr Brown's office (Room A-6). If you are missing something, I will be back in A-5 all this week from 2:30 until after dinner clean-up. Please write your name and address on your receipts and send them to me at 205 Mattison Drive, Concord 01742 or send them in with your child. Copious thanks! Because there were so many generous donations to the Feed the Kids program, we have enough funds to cover the cost of food for this party: munchies and drinks and sweets, and morning donuts and juice. We turn-over the board for the first time (last year we just kept adding to it!) so this is a momentous occasion for CC-POPS. Watch MJ take off the COSTCO tiara and assume the Presidential crown (Do we have a crown? We never did get a gavel...) 7) Of course, Pops concert May 31 (band) and June 1 (chorus). Come to a delightful evening of music and salute our graduating seniors. (We also could use some help with set-up, refreshements, etc.- contact me) 8) And Shakespeare comes to Concord June 7,8,9. Don't miss Puck and his friends - tickets on sale soon. So...we'll be seeing a lot of each other in the next month! First, all photo stuff that's been ordered to date will be ready for pick-up at the concert, with the possible exception of the video. We'll have tables set up for you to collect your stuff and additional order forms and proof books will be available for all shows. Second, if you are a graduating senior family and have contacted me about a table in the front, here's the scoop. We'll plan to keep the front open for senior families until about 15 minutes before the concert starts. If you have called or e-mailed me, I will put your name on a table - I'll save 3-4 seats for anyone who hasn't given me an exact number. At about 7:15, it will be first-come for all remaining seats. Third, I just heard from Sara Ballard and Linda Chateauneuf that we're doing set-up at 10:00 am on Saturday morning - please come join us! Chuck and the kids will be moving furniture and risers on Friday afternoon so Saturday will be tablecloths, balloons, and other fun stuff. We're all busy, so the more people who pitch in, the less stressed we'll all be! Thanks. See you Saturday. It has some background video, and video of most of their performances. There's also a slide show of photos. Each musical number is a separate chapter, so it's easy to scan around. It's about an hour and a half long. This was edited by me on professional-level equipment, so the presentation is better than your normal home movie. The photography is by Sara Ballard and Tom Wilson. The bad news is that the video quality varies from good to poor. This was shot with a hand-held digital camcorder, so it's a bit wobbly, and about half-way through, the camera was misadjusted to maximum brightness, resulting in whited-out images. I corrected it as much as I could, but the Universal Studios performances and the competition are lacking in detail. I've also discovered that some Sony DVD players will not play the slide show. Since these are DVD-Rs, it's possible that some DVD players (particularly old ones) will not play them. I can make these DVDs available for $10 each, so please email me if you'd like one. I need name, address, phone, quantity. The DVDs will have labels. I'll take returns if they don't play for you. I would rather not make tapes, but if you don't have a DVD player, I can copy the DVD to VHS tapes for the same price. If there's enough interest in that, I'll even do a label for the tape. :-) - Stoney -- Stonewall Ballard stoney@sb.org http://www.sb.org/stoney/ From Lindachat1 at aol.com Fri May 31 13:50:05 2002 From: Lindachat1 at aol.com (Lindachat1@aol.com) Date: Tue Oct 14 09:16:01 2003 Subject: [ccpops] Set-up and Clean-up for Pops Concert Message-ID: Hi y'all - We will be setting up for the Pops Concert on Saturday from roughly 10-2, so anyone in the vicinity who would be interested in lending a hand - we would love to have you! Looking forward to seeing you, MJ From mjd205 at mac.com Thu Oct 3 14:47:04 2002 From: mjd205 at mac.com (Mary Jane Divino) Date: Tue Oct 14 09:16:01 2003 Subject: [ccpops] Concert Attire Information Message-ID: Attention! Concert Attire Information: With the first concert less than three weeks away, it's time to avoid last-minute chaos and review concert attire details: Everyone has the identical dress, bow-tie, cummerbund, pants, shirt and jacket, so please clearly label ALL pieces with your student's name. (You will be charged if pieces need to be replaced.) Young women's gowns must be hemmed according to the comfortable black shoes they plan to wear. The dress should brush the top of the foot while wearing the shoe. Nude-colored stockings should be worn. Please use large stitches when making alterations as the stitches may need to be removed in the future. Young women may NOT wear bracelets, necklaces, watches or dangling earrings during any performance. Jewelry glitters under the lights and detracts from the total look. Any jewelry must be removed before going on stage, so it is much better to leave it at home. Small earrings, such as studs, are acceptable. Attention young men: Remember to remove tuxedo shirt studs (small black buttons) before bringing shirt to the cleaners or laundering. Please remember to replace them on the shirt before leaving for the concert. Black dresses and tuxedo shirts wash beautifully, but men's pants and jackets must be dry-cleaned. Thank you for attending to these important guidelines. The students will look as spectacular as they sound! -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I will quote (paraphrase) Maia Tekle's most excellent press release: The CCHS Chorus is sponsoring a fall concert on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:30pm in the CCHS auditorium. Admission is free, but attendees are asked to donate elementary school supplies, which will be collected at the concert and distributed in backpacks to public school children in Boston. Supplies may include crayons, markers, pencils, erasers, construction paper, notebooks, rulers and like items. By the way, the backpacks are extras from EF Tours from the Florida/Virginia trip last year. We have been looking for a good home for them and found this distribution system via Kate Kavanagh (CC-POPS alum) and Loretta Sherblom. Please bring whatever you can. Thanks! If you are free Friday, please consider calling to reserve tickets to this event - it should be lots of fun and will support the arts and performance community! Diane Payne There are still seats available to the Livingston Taylor concert to benefit Concord Youth Theatre, which will take place this Friday October 25, 2002, 8:00 pm at Emerson Umbrella. There were rave reviews and a sell-out audience two years ago when Livingston Taylor performed for CYT, and we hope for a repeat performance. This is CYT's main fundraiser this year, and we need your support. Tickets are $100 for the Producer's Circle which includes a reception with the Artist at 7:00 pm, premium seating and a CD, $50 for the Director's Circle, which includes choice seating and CD, and Concert Only (general seating) for $30. There will also be a silent auction starting at 6:30 p.m. So please, please call the CYT Box Office at 978 371-1482 and make your reservation today. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yesterday I was teased about always saying, "Thank you." In my defense, I want to point out that one of the perks of this position is the 'view' that I have of the organization. I have the opportunity to realize what it takes to make CCPOPS so successful. Last night's "A Time to Shine" is a perfect example. Tom Wilson organized his team several months ago. Remarkable committee chairs recruited others to get involved. Last night's success was the result of many people spending many hours planning, organizing, rehearsing, cooking, decorating, serving and cleaning-up. The Elks Club is an acoustical nightmare, yet the tech students transformed it into a delightful performance venue, spending the entire day perfecting the sound and lights, and then staying on-duty all through the evening to ensure that each performer truly 'shone'. When the last bow was taken, these tireless 'techies' packed the equipment and transported it back to CCHS. Other students racked up fourteen hours in the kitchen, performing sous-chef duties and then completing all the washing-up! The student waitstaff were cheerfully efficient, in spite of the challenges of tight spaces. The MC's kept the evening moving with effortless grace and humor. Anita Tekle (who baked all the delicious rolls), Yvonne Larson (who spent fourteen hours in the kitchen yesterday and will spend most of today unloading her car), Kathy Kennedy (dessert-creator and co-chef) avoided the spotlight last night, but they can't avoid our gratitude! We so appreciate the generosity of the local merchants and individuals who donated such amazing items for the Silent Auction, as well as the generosity of the 'bidders'! A special thank-you to the folks who needed to wait for their soup. Please accept our apology and understand how much we appreciate your patience and graciousness. I can't possibly list all the individuals who deserve recognition - including their good-natured spouses/families. If appreciation were fairy dust, Carol Jamison and I would be sprinkling it on each and every person who helped make "A TIme To Shine" such a marvelous event. For me, it was a magical evening. The performers were superb! The parents showed where all that talent came from, and our opening and closing acts blew me away. Of course, we could see and hear it all because of our techies! We had a full house! Thanks to all of the publicity and ticket sales, we were full up! TTS could not be successful without the attendees, and we had them! The food was awesome! We should adjust the recipes next year -- there were not a lot of bowls left at the end of the night with soup left in them! I wanted to pick up my "cup" and slurp those last few drops, but felt it would be slightly less than polite in the TTS setting! It was served smoothly and well, thanks to our competent student waitstaff, The room was stunning -- The color choice, and the way the stage was configured, the tables, everything! More than one person told me about how beautiful the room was. They found it amazing that it could look so wonderful -- what is normally an empty cavernous space. The auction also went very well. We had lots of great items thanks to the generosity of our parents, teachers and the community. We went into TTS with over $2000 in bids, thanks to a very cool online preauction. Virtually everything was bid on and purchased, thanks to the generosity of our attendees. In addition checkout proceeded smoothly and rapidly. I don't recall seeing anyone waiting to check out for more than a few minutes. In short, so many people worked so hard to make this happen -- it is truly a community event, and everybody played their part. We raised a significant amount of money (we don't have final figures yet) to support our kids and their performances. In the end, it is all about the kids! Thank you to everybody who participated! The CCHS drama department once again is breaking new ground with their presentation of the Laramie Project December 6-8. The Laramie Project is a dramatic play based on the true story of Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old, murdered in 1998 in Laramie Wyoming. The murder was a hate crime based on the fact that Matthew was gay. The play portrays the struggles of the townspeople and the nations reaction to the murder and aftermath. ?We are taking on some strong and tough subject matter in this production,? says Chuck Brown Choral and Drama Director at CCHS. ?Each scene that the students play makes the audience ask questions and face some ugly realities. But we know as a school that we have to ask the tough questions, discuss the tough subjects in order to make the kids find the strength in themselves to do the right thing? Moises Kaufman who developed the play with the Tectonic Theater Project of New York wrote the Laramie Project. The play has been made into a movie, which was the featured film at the Sundance Theater Festival in 2001 and has been shown on HBO this year. The book was also used by TIME and turned into classroom curriculum for high school students. The cast and crew are all CCHS students ranging from freshman to seniors. CCHS?s production is the first time a public high school has taken on this project. Matthew Shepard?s mother has spoken to Chuck Brown in order to convey her sense of urgency in stamping out hate crime by educating young people. Tickets are $10 available at Video Revolution, Concord Five& Ten, Daisy?s in Carlisle, The Toy Shop and The Cheese Shop. Performances are at CCHS December 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m and December 8 at 2:00 p.m. ## From mjd205 at mac.com Mon Dec 9 12:54:34 2002 From: mjd205 at mac.com (Mary Jane Divino) Date: Tue Oct 14 09:16:02 2003 Subject: [ccpops] The Laramie Project Message-ID: <03A5C7CC-06D6-11D7-B675-0030657AC5B6@mac.com> Dear CCPOPS members, Marilyn Brady's article reminds us of the event scheduled for this weekend. It is very exciting that the CCHS administration has asked the Drama Department to extend 'The Laramie Project' for two more shows for the student population. The 'set strike' scheduled for Sunday has been rescheduled and we really need your help. We will be gathering in the CCHS Auditorium at 7:30pm on Thursday, December 12th to dismantle the set. With a good crew, the task should only take about an hour. We need some folks who are comfortable with power tools to do the dismantling, but we can use 'inexperienced' hands to help with the 'lugging', so please come along regardless of your skill level. We'll be working all day, so if you can put in a few hours at any time that's convenient, please email me at philbelink@aol.com and copy to mjd205@mac.com. Here's what we need: We need help on construction of a new closet for tech equipment and for putting up new shelves and racks to reorganize the prop closet. That will take some people who can use hammers and drills etc. We also need lots of hands to remove everything from the prop closet and then reorganize it in the closet after the shelves and racks are up. Would love to have both parents and kids for this. Please come and help!!!! This needs to be done before we get going on Ragtime. The show is big and organization of our costumes and technical equipment is important. Thanks so much for your assistance! Have a very happy New Year celebration! Karen Belinky
