It would be na?ve for someone to think this information will not be abused in the future. Virtually every decade these kinds of files have been used to violate people?s privacy.? -- Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana Subject: Chertoff threatens governor, governor threatens Chertoff We knew that the state of Montana was resisting the REAL ID Act, but we just learned some of the details of that resistance. The story is so good we had to share it, in case you hadn't heard . . . Brian Schweitzer, the governor of Montana, wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. The letter informed Chertoff that Montana would not be complying with the REAL ID Act. Our quote of the day supplies one of the reasons for Governor Schweitzer's rebellion. In response to the letter . . . Secretary Chertoff called Governor Schweitzer and threatened him. Chertoff told Schweitzer that Montana residents would be banned from airplanes, or subjected to severe, time-consuming inspections at airports. The Governor countered with his own threat, ?How about we both go on 60 Minutes a few days after the DHS starts patting down Montana driver?s license-holders who are trying to get on the planes and both of us can tell our side of the story.? Chertoff didn't like that suggestion. He said, ?I see the problem. We need to get this fixed.? So far, the "fix" involves granting Montana and all other rebellious states an extension of the deadline for complying with the REAL ID Act. But the real fix is to repeal REAL ID. Have you protested to your elected representatives that the Secretary of Homeland Security has been threatening the citizens of states that don't comply with REAL ID? If not, please do so. You can mention the Chertoff-Schweitzer exchange in your personal comments. Ask Congress to repeal the REAL ID Act. You can send your message here. Brief description of 9/11 Press For Truth: Out of the grieving thousands left behind on September 11th, a small group of activist families emerged to demand answers. In 9/11 Press For Truth, six of them (including three of the famous "Jersey Girls") tell for the first time the powerful story of how they took on the powers in Washington?and won!?compelling an investigation, only to subsequently watch the 9/11 Commission fail in answering most of their questions. The families eventually found an ally in Paul Thompson. Dissatisfied with the incomplete picture of September 11th presented in most news reports, Thompson became a citizen journalist of sorts. He stitched together thousands of rare overlooked news clips, buried stories, and government press conferences into a definitive Complete 9/11 Timeline (published by Harper Collins as The Terror Timeline). Press For Truth is adapted in part from his acclaimed work, which revealed to the families a very different picture of the road that led to the attacks and the resulting War on Terror, one that still today raises important and pressing questions. If you haven't seen this film, COME. It is free. If you have seen this film, COME. Watch it again. It is free. Tell your friends. Tell your family members. Tell your co-workers. Hal Is Rupert Murdoch "Lovin' It?" Submitted by meg on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 3:01pm. Analysis A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS by Meg White Rumors began circulating around several news Web sites and blogs yesterday that McDonald's has a policy to exclusively play FOX News on its in-restaurant televisions. Apparently, someone who called in to a program on C-SPAN said he had gone to a McDonald's in Missouri and asked them to change the channel from FOX to something else. Workers there refused, saying they weren't allowed to change the channel due to corporate policy. The caller said he then spoke with a regional director. An e-mail written by a C-SPAN watcher who goes by "Libby" said that the caller said that the regional director told him the policy was due to "bad things on other channels." A post on Daily Kos said this about the encounter: "McDonald's was in the process of installing wide screen TVs in all of their restaurants over the entire five-state region, and that the 'FOX News only policy' was corporate policy for all McDonald's restaurants in the region. The director also stated that the reason for this policy was that McDonald's had determined that there is less violence on FOX News than any other channel." The fact that a home on the city's east side was listed for $1 recently shows how depressed the real estate market has become in one of America's poorest big cities. And it still took 19 days to find a buyer. The sale price of the home may be an anomaly, but illustrates both the depths of the foreclosure crisis in Detroit and the rapid scuttling of vacant homes in some of the city's impoverished neighborhoods. The home, at 8111 Traverse Street, a few blocks from Detroit City Airport, was the nicest house on the block when it sold for $65,000 in November 2006, said neighbor Carl Upshaw. But the home was foreclosed last summer, and it wasn't long until "the vultures closed in," Upshaw said. "The siding was the first to go. Then they took the fence. Then they broke in and took everything else." The company hired to manage the home and sell it, the Bearing Group, boarded up the home only to find the boards stolen and used to board up another abandoned home nearby. Scrappers tore out the copper plumbing, the furnace and the light fixtures, taking everything of value, including the kitchen sink. "It about doesn't make sense to put the family out," Upshaw said. "Once people are gone, you're gonna lose the house in this neighborhood." Tuesday, the home was wide open. Doors leading into the kitchen and the basement were missing, and the front windows had been smashed. Weeds grew chest-high, and charred remains marked a spot where the garage recently burned. Put on the market in January for $1,100, the house had no lookers other than the squatters who sometimes stayed there at night. Facing $4,000 in back taxes and a large unpaid water bill, the bank that owned the property lowered the price to $1. $1 sale to cost bank $10,000 While it's not unusual for $1 to be exchanged when property is transferred for legal reasons, listing a home in the Multiple Listing Service for $1 was surprising and unsettling to Kent Colpaert, the listing real estate agent for the property. "I've never seen a home listed for $1," Colpaert said. "But it's been hit hard: It's just a shell." On Tuesday, Realtor.com listed one other single-family home, one duplex and one empty lot at $1 in Detroit. Dollar property sales are the financial hangover from the foreclosure crisis, said Anthony Viola of Realty Corp. of America in Cleveland. Lenders that made loans to unqualified buyers during the height of the subprime market now find themselves the owners of whole neighborhoods of vacant, deteriorating homes. "No one has much sympathy for these banks that made subprime loans," Viola said. "And in some cities like Cleveland, judges aren't letting them sit on the properties -- they're ordering them to tear them down or sell them." So desperate was the bank owner of 8111 Traverse Street to unload the property that it agreed to pay $2,500 in sales commission and another $1,000 bonus for closing the $1 sale; the bank also will pay $500 of the buyer's closing costs. Throw in back taxes and a water bill, and unloading the house will cost the bank about $10,000. "It doesn't make sense in some neighborhoods to keep paying costs and costs," Colpaert said. "It can make more financial sense to give it away." Buyer calls it an investment Colpaert declined to provide the name of the prospective purchaser, because the deal had not been through closing. The agent did say that the buyer agreed to pay the full list price of $1, and planned to pay cash. The buyer, a local woman, considers the home to be an investment property and will not live there, Colpaert said, though exactly how soon the buyer can expect to recoup her four-quarter investment is questionable. Replacing the guts of the house will costs tens of thousands of dollars, and the owner will have trouble keeping scrappers from stealing the improvements as quickly as they're installed. Home demolition costs about $5,000, Colpaert said. Meanwhile, the new owner will owe $3,900 in property taxes in 2009 on her dollar purchase unless she challenges the tax assessment. While selling a home for the amount of change most people could find between their couch cushions is unusual, some abandoned homes in Detroit sell for $100; vacant lots can be purchased for $300. "My 14-year-old son could buy a block of Detroit property," said Ann Laciura, senior servicing specialist for the Bearing Group. /You can reach Ron French at (313) 222-2175 or rfrench at detnews.com ./ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... House prices in the US are plunging at their fastest rate for 12 years, leaving millions of people struggling to meet home loans often provided by unscrupulous lenders after making minimal checks on the suitability of borrowers. Among Americans who bought homes since the beginning of 2003, some 29.1% are in negative equity according to research by Zillow.com, an online specialist in house values. For those who bought in 2006, as many as 45% have mortgages under water in comparison to the sale value of their property. "For homeowners who need to sell, this is a gravely serious situation," Stan Humphries, Zillow's vice-president of analytics, told Bloomberg News. "It can also be harmful to communities where the number of unsold homes adds more houses to inventory and puts downward pressure on prices." The latest figures on house prices showed a year on year drop of 9.9%. Worst hit are previously booming areas such as Los Angeles, where prices are down 27%, and Las Vegas, which has seen a drop of 21%. Citigroup's housebuilding analyst, Josh Levin, yesterday predicted that property prices could continue falling through 2010 and possibly 2011. One of America's largest mortgage finance companies recently forecast that prices would drop by between 18% and 20% from "peak to trough" in the current downturn. Freddie Mac said the US property market was in its most dismal condition since the great depression of the 1930s. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... His Washington County colleagues agree. "I'm absolutely stunned," David Whitaker, chairman of the Washington County Democratic Party, said. "Bill was just a super guy, and I just can't imagine anyone wanting to do this to him." According to an Associated Press story, a gunman entered the Arkansas Democr atic Party headquarters a little before noon on Wednesday and asked to speak to Gwatney. The story stated that, after a short wait, the gunman left the waiting room, entered Gwatney's office and shot the chairman three times. According to the report, Gwatney was rushed to the hospital where he died at about 4 p.m. Moments after the shooting, the man pointed a handgun at the building manager for the Arkansas State Baptist Convention, seven blocks east of the Democratic headquarters. Police chased the suspect into Grant County, south of Little Rock. Near Sheridan along U. S. 167, the suspect avoided spike strips set in the road, then drove into a ditch to avoid another roadblock. Police eventually rammed the truck, spinning it. A state police unit also rammed into the vehicle, and shots were fired by the Arkansas State Police. The AP also reported that the suspect was killed in a police shoot-out in Sheridan. Beebe was en route to Springdale on a private jet when he heard about the shootings. "There is deep pain in Arkansas tonight because of the sheer number of people who knew, respected and loved Bill Gwatney. Along with thousands of other Arkansans, Ginger (Beebe ) and I are trying to come to terms with such a shocking and senseless attack. We ask all Arkansans to keep the Gwatney family in your thoughts and prayers," Beebe said in his statement. Despite the current national hysteria over oil, it's the privatization of basic food sources -- seeds and water -- that should worry us the most. A lot of it is happening under the radar. Seeds -- with Monsanto being one of the biggest culprits -- are rapidly becoming patented due to genetic modification. And patented seeds are being aggressively marketed by corporations to squeeze open market seeds out of the market place for many essential fruits and vegetables. More menacing is that courts are granting absurd patent right extensions to GM seed ownership, to the point that farmers are responsible for NOT harvesting any GM crops whose seeds might have been blown onto their fields! This book is a fair, balanced look at the threat that GM products pose to us in terms of industry control of the food supply chain and GM seeds. Hall of mirrors. Please share widely. Beverley http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/aug/14/russia.georgia GUARDIAN.CO.UK This is a tale of US expansion not Russian aggression War in the Caucasus is as much the product of an American imperial drive as local conflicts. It's likely to be a taste of things to com Seumas Milne The Guardian, Thursday August 14 200 The outcome of six grim days of bloodshed in the Caucasus has triggered an outpouring of the most nauseating hypocrisy from western politicians and their captive media. As talking heads thundered against Russian imperialism and brutal disproportionality, US vice-president Dick Cheney, faithfully echoed by Gordon Brown and David Miliband, declared that "Russian aggression must not go unanswered". George Bush denounced Russia for having "invaded a sovereign neighbouring state" and threatening "a democratic government". Such an action, he insisted, "is unacceptable in the 21st century". Could these by any chance be the leaders of the same governments that in 2003 invaded and occupied - along with Georgia, as luck would have it - the sovereign state of Iraq on a false pretext at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives? Or even the two governments that blocked a ceasefire in the summer of 2006 as Israel pulverised Lebanon's infrastructure and killed more than a thousand civilians in retaliation for the capture or killing of five soldiers? You'd be hard put to recall after all the fury over Russian aggression that it was actually Georgia that began the war last Thursday with an all-out attack on South Ossetia to "restore constitutional order" - in other words, rule over an area it has never controlled since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Nor, amid the outrage at Russian bombardments, have there been much more than the briefest references to the atrocities committed by Georgian forces against citizens it claims as its own in South Ossetia's capital Tskhinvali. Several hundred civilians were killed there by Georgian troops last week, along with Russian soldiers operating under a 1990s peace agreement: "I saw a Georgian soldier throw a grenade into a basement full of women and children," one Tskhinvali resident, Saramat Tskhovredov, told reporters on Tuesday Might it be because Georgia is what Jim Murphy, Britain's minister for Europe, called a "small beautiful democracy". Well it's certainly small and beautiful, but both the current president, Mikheil Saakashvili, and his predecessor came to power in western-backed coups, the most recent prettified as a "Rose revolution". Saakashvili was then initially rubber-stamped into office with 96% of the vote before establishing what the International Crisis Group recently described as an "increasingly authoritarian" government, violently cracking down on opposition dissent and independent media last November. "Democratic" simply seems to mean "pro-western" in these cases The long-running dispute over South Ossetia - as well as Abkhazia, the other contested region of Georgia - is the inevitable consequence of the breakup of the Soviet Union. As in the case of Yugoslavia, minorities who were happy enough to live on either side of an internal boundary that made little difference to their lives feel quite differently when they find themselves on the wrong side of an international state borde Such problems would be hard enough to settle through negotiation in any circumstances. But add in the tireless US promotion of Georgia as a pro-western, anti-Russian forward base in the region, its efforts to bring Georgia into Nato, the routing of a key Caspian oil pipeline through its territory aimed at weakening Russia's control of energy supplies, and the US-sponsored recognition of the independence of Kosovo - whose status Russia had explicitly linked to that of South Ossetia and Abkhazia - and conflict was only a matter of time The CIA has in fact been closely involved in Georgia since the Soviet collapse. But under the Bush administration, Georgia has become a fully fledged US satellite. Georgia's forces are armed and trained by the US and Israel. It has the third-largest military contingent in Iraq - hence the US need to airlift 800 of them back to fight the Russians at the weekend. Saakashvili's links with the neoconservatives in Washington are particularly close: the lobbying firm headed by US Republican candidate John McCain's top foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, has been paid nearly $900,000 by the Georgian government since 2004 But underlying the conflict of the past week has also been the Bush administration's wider, explicit determination to enforce US global hegemony and prevent any regional challenge, particularly from a resurgent Russia. That aim was first spelled out when Cheney was defence secretary under Bush's father, but its full impact has only been felt as Russia has begun to recover from the disintegration of the 1990s Over the past decade, Nato's relentless eastward expansion has brought the western military alliance hard up against Russia's borders and deep into former Soviet territory. American military bases have spread across eastern Europe and central Asia, as the US has helped install one anti-Russian client government after another through a series of colour-coded revolutions. Now the Bush administration is preparing to site a missile defence system in eastern Europe transparently targeted at Russi By any sensible reckoning, this is not a story of Russian aggression, but of US imperial expansion and ever tighter encirclement of Russia by a potentially hostile power. That a stronger Russia has now used the South Ossetian imbroglio to put a check on that expansion should hardly come as a surprise. What is harder to work out is why Saakashvili launched last week's attack and whether he was given any encouragement by his friends in Washington. If so, it has spectacularly backfired, at savage human cost. And despite Bush's attempts to talk tough yesterday, the war has also exposed the limits of US power in the region. As long as Georgia proper's independence is respected - best protected by opting for neutrality - that should be no bad thing. Unipolar domination of the world has squeezed the space for genuine self-determination and the return of some counterweight has to be welcome. But the process of adjustment also brings huge dangers. If Georgia had been a member of Nato, this week's conflict would have risked a far sharper escalation. That would be even more obvious in the case of Ukraine - which yesterday gave a warning of the potential for future confrontation when its pro-western president threatened to restrict the movement of Russian ships in and out of their Crimean base in Sevastopol. As great power conflict returns, South Ossetia is likely to be only a taste of things to come. s.milne at guardian.co.uk -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The "free speech zone", surrounded by a three-and-a-half-foot-high impromptu metal barrier serving as a makeshift fence, sat just south of eastern base of the North Avenue foot bridge, near the intersection of North Avenue and Lake Show Drive. Peace activists and antiwar critics against the Air and Water Show have been a regular presence at the Show since 1993, who traditionally assemble near the North Avenue bridge. Activists and critics routinely decried the event's rampant commercialism and critiquing the Air and Water Show as being a giant commercial for the military and as a bonanza for military recruitment. Until recently, activists who assembled at the Air And Water Show could assemble and interact with other attendees unimpeded. However, in the 2008 Show, activists were ordered to remain within the confines of the "free speech zone", roughly eight feet away from the sidewalk and on a hard-to-walk-on sandy surface. Police said that individuals who left the "free speech zone" would be arrested. The presence of the "free speech zone" made it much harder for passersby to interact with activists, placing the burden of effort to interact wholly on the passerby. Peace activists nevertheless still spoke with passersby who approached the fence and handed out flyers and brochures insofar as possible -- despite the fence and despite armed police officers standing guard at the fence and along the North Avenue foot bridge. Officially stated reasons for placing the fencing for this protest are mixed and have roused suspicion. "[Officials] say that the corporate counsel determined that we represent an impediment to traffic," said Jane Becker, an activist with the Chicago chapter of the activist group World Can't Wait. "That would be about twelve of us, in a group officially estimated at, I don't know, half a million people. The twelve of us are an impediment to public safety and traffic? I don't think so." When this reporter asked one police officer as to why the fencing is put in place for the activist, the police officer responded that the activists didn't have a permit, even though past peace protests at the Air And Water Show were not fenced off despite not having a permit. The whole situation is fraught with further double-standards. Throughout the Air and Water Show, displays for a host of commercial and military entities and services were openly available and openly distributing flyers, yet police questioned activists for merely handing out flyers as "protesting" the Air And Water Show. Activists strongly believed that the fence and affiliated crackdown is connected with stifling organized opposition to the ongoing U.S. war in Iraq, whose costs in lives and dollars have escalated, and to the military, whose recruitment efforts have seen a downturn. "I think they want to suppress voices in opposition to the Air and Water Show, voices in opposition to the war," Becker also said. Legal avenues to challenge the constitutionality of the fence and the "free speech zone" are not hopeful. "The ACLU has informed us that they have never won a free-speech-zone case. Thus, if we are arrested, we are on our own," said Ron Kunde of Chicago Media Action. "It would help if we had some legal representation. We really feel abandoned." Officials from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia have agreed to install 200 license plate readers on police vehicles, at airports and along roads. The plan announced Friday will be funded by federal homeland security grants for the area. Britain used the readers in the 1990s to deter Irish Republican Army attacks. But in the United States, the devices have mostly been used to regulate parking or catch car thieves. The readers will scan every license plate that passes by and will run the numbers through federal criminal and terrorist databases. New York officials recently said they plan to scan license plates of all cars entering Manhattan. Privacy experts say it's a vast expansion of the use of technology for security. ___ Information from: The Washington Post, http://www.washingtonpost.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jeff Zurawski, 40, of Downers Grove and Sarah Hartfield, 45, of Naperville were charged after they placed a banner that read "IMPEACH Bush and Cheney-Liars" on the Great Western Trail footbridge overlooking Interstate Highway 355 near Glen Ellyn for several hours May 6, 2007. DuPage Judge Ronald Sutter dismissed the charges when an area truck driver failed to appear in court. The driver, Charles Hardin of Carol Stream, had placed a 911 call to DuPage County sheriff's police saying he had seen the couple making a throwing motion toward the highway. He had testified at a pretrial hearing in which Sutter found probable cause to try the couple. Zurawski and Hartfield denied making any such throwing motion and said that by hanging the banner, they were only practicing their right to free speech. Since their arrest, supporters have staged three rallies at the courthouse. On Wednesday, 50 supporters applauded them. "Prosecutors had the burden to prove their case, and they needed their witness to have a chance," said Shawn Collins, the Naperville attorney who represented the couple for free. "I would have preferred to confront the evidence because they had a right to oppose the Iraq war on a public sidewalk." Zurawski said, "I feel relieved, but we shouldn't have been dragged into this by a vindictive prosecution. Maybe a public apology would help restore my confidence in the system." Zurawski said his anti-war efforts in the DuPage area will continue and that the banner he displayed over the highway will probably be seen publicly again. The maximum penalty for misdemeanor disorderly conduct is a year in County Jail. State's Atty. Joseph Birkett had said that the charges did not have anything to do with political expression but rather public safety. ? http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=229119&src=2 DAILY HERALD Fed up with the war in Iraq, Sarah Hartfield and Jeff Zurawski unfurled a banner along a DuPage County overpass to share their views with motorists traveling along a bustling highway. They insisted it was a peaceful demonstration but both were arrested in a criminal case that sparked a fervor among anti-war advocates who accused authorities of trampling on the Constitution. Fifteen months after the saga began, prosecutors dropped the charges Wednesday after the trucker who called 911 to complain that day didn't show up for court to testify at trial. DuPage Associate Judge Ronald Sutter denied the prosecution's request for a continuance, forcing them to dismiss the disorderly conduct allegation for lack of evidence. Afterward, roughly 50 supporters seated in the courtroom gallery rose to their feet in thunderous applause. "I'm supposed to feel relieved and I do a little bit," said Zurawski of Downers Grove, "but I'm still troubled that this ever happened. We deserve the right to express an opinion without being dragged into the legal system. Having been led away from my home in handcuffs, after doing nothing wrong, still burns a bit." Zurawski, 40, and his friend, Hartfield, 46, of Naperville, were arrested two weeks after their May 6, 2007, demonstration. They road their bikes to a pedestrian bridge that spans I-355 near Glen Ellyn and unfurled a large banner that read: "Impeach Bush and Cheney - liars." They also displayed an upside-down American flag for about 90 minutes. Weeks later, a DuPage County sheriff's deputy pursued the misdemeanor charge after he said a passing trucker complained. Initially, prosecutors alleged the pair tossed something onto the roadway, causing motorists to swerve. Later, though, the charge was amended to suggest they made a "throwing motion." The protesters deny pretending to or actually throwing anything. Rather, both said they were prosecuted because of their political beliefs. But DuPage State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said the charges had nothing to do with politics. "This was a traffic hazard," he said. "That's why we went forward with the complaint. I respect every person's First Amendment right. I don't think we should ever take any steps to curtail that. This had only to do with traffic safety on a highway. "You can't yell fire in a crowd and you can't hang a very large display over a highway like that. It's just unsafe." Naperville attorney Shawn Collins represented Hartfield and Zurawski for free. Collins said he was confident they would have won had the case went to trial. "I took this case because I felt what happened to them was wrong," Collins said. Groups such as DuPage Against War Now and the DuPage Peace Through Justice Coalition became involved. The case sparked letter-writing campaigns, petition drives, Internet forum debates from folks as far away as Australia, Britain, China, Ireland and the U.K. Several small protests were conducted outside the Wheaton courthouse. The protesters said they plan to continue participating in peaceful demonstrations. Message-ID: <988661.81128.qm@web33504.mail.mud.yahoo.com> An Open Letter [Please forward widely] 16 July 2008 In six weeks, the Democrats meet in Denver. As recent news makes clear, an attack on Iran could happen before the election, driving the Bush Agenda into the next administration, whoever the president is. Who will stop an attack on Iran? Not the Democrats who secretly authorized military operations George Bush already has underway inside Iran. Not the Democratic leaders?including Senator Obama?who insist, again and again, that ?all options? remain on the table for military action against Iran, including the use of nuclear weapons! Not the Democrats who, in their majority, including Obama, not only sanctioned retroactive immunity for the large telecom companies who went along with Bush and spied on people, but have given them prospective immunity in expanded government spying. This war now belongs to the Democrats no less than the Republicans. If it is left to McCain and Obama, the occupation will continue for years. It was wrong to go into Iraq, it?s wrong to stay in Iraq, it?s wrong not to get out now! If there is not a strong showing from the anti-war movement against this whole direction outside the convention, it will signal those who make war and the victims of these wars around the world that the people of this country will go along with continued occupation, with McCain or Obama sending many more troops to Afghanistan, and with threats to Iran. The Bush regime promised a war to last generations. Are we against this, or not? The anti-war movement must set a standard of resistance, not accommodate what is intolerable. Only the people?not the politicians?can force open debate over why the U.S. occupation must end now. Only we can act on our convictions, letting others know that an end to the illegal, unjust and immoral wars and occupations will not happen without massive mobilization of the people, and that putting all your hopes and energies into the elections will not bring the change millions desire. Some people say protest does not work. They are WRONG! What does not work is passivity in the face of a government being more widely exposed as committing war crimes and a public increasingly sickened by what is being done in their name. If the anti-war movement was so ineffectual why did the New York Times have to call it the ?other superpower?? Whether one plans on voting for Obama or not, we all must be in the streets making our clear opposition to torture, bloody occupations and any new war against Iran vividly clear. People are traveling the country to campaign for Obama. With a strong call from the anti-war movement, some will be willing to bring an anti-war message to Denver. Local Denver activists have gone to court for permits for political protest outside the convention, and have permits for nearby parks. Recreate68 plans a march against the war on Sunday August 24, the day before the convention starts. The Alliance for Real Democracy, another coalition, is currently not planning to join this march. Whatever differences exist, they pale in comparison to the responsibility those of us who are not at peace with being at war have to stop the U.S. occupation of the Middle East. The world needs to see us in the streets in Denver, marching together on the eve of the convention opening. If you?re concerned this protest will be too small, you?re not alone. The people in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan & Pakistan whose lives may be lost to further US aggression share that concern. It is the responsibility of those of us who know the devastation and misery the continued occupation of Iraq and an attack on Iran would bring to the world, to struggle to bring many more forward to participate in this. This is a call to MARCH together with the demand Stop the War in Iraq/Afghanistan, and Stop an Attack on Iran! You could have separate rallies and speakers at different sites in the park, but call out the many thousands of people to march together. We will join with others in mobilizing everyone who has ever been against this war, and all those who know in their hearts this is wrong, to be in the streets of Denver, standing with the people of the world and refusing to be party to these wars. We the undersigned will do all we can to get people to Denver to participate. (signed) Missy Beattie Fr. He plans to "redeploy combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month that would remove them in 16 months? ? while sending 14,000 of them to expand the war in Afghanistan! He has never called the war categorically illegal and immoral, or a war crime. Instead he calls for a troop increase and "the first truly 21st century military ... We must maintain the strongest, best-equipped military in the world." Obama has threatened (several times) to attack Iran, including with nukes, over nukes Iran doesn?t have. He?s threatened (several times) to attack Pakistan and he embraces Israel as if it were the 51st state. In Miami in August 2007, he said as president he would not lift the U.S. embargo against Cuba because it is "an important inducement for change.? And ask yourself: Why would any ?peace candidate? have as his top foreign policy advisers Zbigniew Brzezinski and Madeleine Albright? ???? Where does Barack Obama stand on torture? Do you want to settle for this? After 8 years of this abominable Bush Regime, after all we now know about the secret renditions and secret torture sites, and the White House meetings where the torture was planned at the top ? after the rest of the world has come to know that America has been guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity ? is Barack Obama saying it?s time to hold these people accountable?? No, Obama says there will be ?investigations,? BUT he is promising there will be NO prosecutions during his first term (four long years).? ???? Where does Barack Obama stand on the fascist FISA bill? Do you want to settle for this? In light of all we now know about the spying and lying, and the construction of a whole new outrageous level of state spying on people in this country, what does Obama say about these clearly impeachable offenses? Does he distance himself from the outrages and crimes of the Bush Regime? When the FISA bill came up, Obama said he would vote against it. Then he voted for it. ???? Where does Obama stand on the persecution of immigrants? Do you want to settle for this? Obama voted for the 2006 Secure Fence Act, which authorized construction of the five segments of the new wall along the U.S./Mexican border. And as for ?Camp X-Ray (Denver)??. Obama supporters should be demanding that he denounce the political repression now being set up to attack the courageous protestors heading for Denver to raise the anti-war message in the streets outside the Democratic National Convention. If Obama and the top leaders of his Party said they do not want the cages, barbed wire, stun guns, and wholesale ?fusion? of law enforcement and political surveillance now being assembled for the DNC (and who says it will be dismantled after the DNC?) ? what do you bet would happen? Their silence about these police state measures is? deafening. KEEP THIS FLYER. Take it home and stick it on your refrigerator. Over the next 6 months -- as the elections roll on, and the candidates keep talking and acting, and as the next president takes office and carries out the presidential mission ? ask yourself these same questions again. And then ?. DON?T plunge into despair and political paralysis. Call us. We know what it will take to truly bring all this to a halt. The World Can?t Wait ? for the mass resistance and independent action of the people, which is the ONLY way to make the change you are hoping for. No matter who the president is. WORLD CAN?T WAIT ? Thus the letter states: ?Since your historic victory in the primary, there have been troubling signs that you are moving away from the core commitments shared by many who have supported your campaign, toward a more cautious and centrist stance???? Several paragraphs later, the letter finally gets around to mentioning ?withdrawal from Iraq on a fixed timetable? as one of the positions that Obama ?embraced? during the primary. When others have raised such criticisms, Obama has responded that they have not been listening to him.? On this one, I am with Obama.? How can one take this guy seriously as an ?antiwar? candidate when he has voted for hundreds of billions of dollars to fund the Iraq war and to slaughter hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis? Neither Ron Paul nor Dennis Kucinich, both presidential candidates, nor Barbara Lee voted for these funds for a ?war of aggression,? as Ralph Nader has properly called it.? On this score Obama?s voting record is no different from McCain?s or Hillary Clinton?s. And Obama made it clear long ago in one of his few clear statements on the war that he does not oppose all wars and in fact supports ?smart? ones.? Iraq is thus not? a criminal war, a war of aggression, but merely a ?dumb? war.? Presumably the war in Afghanistan that Obama so loves is to be a ?smart? war.? When you come right down to it, how different is Obama?s position that the war is not ?smart? from McCain?s that, until the surge, the war was not ?smartly? waged?? I would say that the difference is less than a dime. The letter is also frankly dishonest when it says that Obama is simply moving to a more ?centrist stance? In what sense ?centrist?? The war is wildly unpopular and close to 70% of Americans want the U.S. out of Iraq asap.? What is ?centrist? about moving away from a landslide majoritarian position?? And what is the ?peace?candidate doing when he calls for 100,000 more active duty army and marines, when he calls for more military spending, when he calls for stepping up the war on Afghanistan, when he talks belligerently about Iran, and when he equivocates on how many tens of thousands of troops are to be left in Iraq?? All these are positions that the ?peace?candidate took during the primary.? They are not new. The ?open letter? also pretends that Obama took a position for universal health care during the primary.? That is true only in words.? As Paul Krugman has pointed out, Obama?s health care plan is even worse than was Hillary Clinton?s ? a mighty low bar. The worst part of the supplicants? letter is that it is all based on wishful thinking.? The idea that Obama is an ?antiwar? or progressive candidate is a fantasy, never supported by the facts.? And there is no way to change Obama by begging as the letter does.? There is plenty of carrot, in fact downright ass kissing, in the letter - but no stick.? Ambitious pols understand sticks. What is awfully irritating is that Katrina Vanden Heuval and the rest of the ?liberal?elite criticize supporters of? McKinney/Clemente and Nader/Gonzalez for ?wishful thinking.?? Compared to the sentiments and views of the supplicants? letter, supporters of third party candidates are hard core realists. And it is very sad to see some of the signatories of this letter who in better times would have been men and women who put principle over partisanship.? Read the letter carefully.? Look at the signatories.? It may bring tears. John V. Walsh can be reached at john.endwar at gmail.com Declare It Now! Wear Orange! Read the following news account of it. Then you?ABSOLUTELY MUST WATCH?the Barry Jennings' account (less than five minutes long,)?of the WTC7 explosions and dead bodies BEFORE BOTH WTC1 AND WTC2 CAME DOWN. ? Who was Berry Jennings? He was the Deputy Director of Emergency Services for New York City. He was trapped in WTC7. ? When did WTC7 go down? It went down at 5:25 IN THE AFTERNOON OF 9/11. About six hours?AFTER the twin towers went down. ? Here are?three photos of the collapse of WTC7. First, NOTICE THE ABSENCE OF ANY FIRE. And second, and even more telling, notice the slight "kink" near the center of the roof-line, THIS IS THE TELLTALE SIGNATURE OF CONTROLLED DEMOLITION - THEY BLOW THE CENTER COLUMS JUST SLIGHTLY AHEAD OF THE EXTERIOR SO THE BUILDING WILL FALL IN?IT'S OWN FOOTPRINT?AND NOT DESTROY SURROUNDING PROPERTY. ? ?? Where is the fire? See Madrid hotel fire below. ? ? Then, if you have the time, watch the Alex Jennings account of why the Barry Jennings' account was released. It is about?ten minutes long. ? Here is the report of the official story: ? Feds: Fire took down building next to twin towers By DEVLIN BARRETT ? 1 day ago ? GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) ? Federal investigators said Thursday they have solved a mystery of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks: the collapse of World Trade Center building 7, a source of long-running conspiracy theories. ? The 47-story trapezoid-shaped building sat north of the World Trade Center towers, across Vesey Street in lower Manhattan in New York. On Sept. 11, it was set on fire by falling debris from the burning towers, but skeptics long have argued that fire and debris alone should not have brought down such a big steel-and-concrete structure. ? Scientists with the National Institute of Standards and Technology say their three-year investigation of the collapse determined the demise of WTC 7 was actually the first time in the world a fire caused the total failure of a modern skyscraper. [See Madrid hotel fire photos below] ? "The reason for the collapse of World Trade Center 7 is no longer a mystery," said Dr. Shyam Sunder, the lead investigator on the NIST team. ? Investigators also concluded that the collapse of the nearby towers broke the city water main, leaving the sprinkler system in the bottom half of the building without water. ? The building has been the subject of a wide range of conspiracy theories for the last seven years, partly because the collapse occurred about seven hours after the twin towers came down. That fueled suspicion that someone intentionally blew up the building in a controlled demolition. ? Critics like Mike Berger of the group 9/11 Truth said he wasn't buying the government's explanation. ? "Their explanation simply isn't sufficient. We're being lied to," he said, arguing that there is other evidence suggesting explosives were used on the building. ? Sunder said his team investigated the possibility that an explosion inside the building brought it down, but found there was no large boom or other noise that would have occurred with such a detonation. Investigators also created a giant computer model of the collapse, based partly on news footage from CBS News, that they say shows that internal column failure brought down the building. ? Investigators also ruled out the possibility that the collapse was caused by fires from a substantial amount of diesel fuel that was stored in the building, most of it for generators for the city's emergency operations command center. ? The 77-page report concluded that the fatal blow to the building came when the 13th floor collapsed, weakening a critical steel support column that led to catastrophic failure. ? "When this critical column buckled due to lack of floor supports, it was the first domino in the chain," said Sunder. ? The NIST investigators issued more than a dozen building recommendations as a result of their inquiry, most of which repeat earlier recommendations from their investigation into the collapse of the two large towers. ? In both instances, investigators concluded that extreme heat caused some steel beams to lose strength, causing further failures throughout the buildings until the entire structure succumbed. ? The recommendations include building skyscrapers with stronger connections and framing systems to resist the effects of thermal expansion, and structural systems designed to prevent damage to one part of a building from spreading to other parts. ? No one was killed in the collapse of building 7 because it had been fully evacuated. [Listen to Barry Jennings' video.] ?A new, slightly taller World Trade Center 7 opened in 2006. ? A spokesman for the leaseholder of the World Trade Center, developer Larry Silverstein, praised the government's work. [Silverstein collected $3.2 BILLION in insurance from the 911 attacks.] ? "Hopefully this thorough report puts to rest the various 9/11 conspiracy theories, which dishonor the men and women who lost their lives on that terrible day," said Silverstein spokesman Dara McQuillan. ? In discussing the findings, the investigator Sunder acknowledged that some may still not be convinced, but insisted the science behind their findings is "incredibly conclusive." "The public should really recognize the science is really behind what we have said," he said, adding: "The obvious stares you in the face." ? ? Here is the Barry Jennings video: ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbbZE7c3a8Q ? Here is the Alex Jones/Barry Jennings video: ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L44L1WU5HU&feature=related ? ? In case you are wondering about the significance of WTC7 as to what was in it. Well, there was a lot, a real lot. It was the biggest CIA office outside of Langley, VA. It was the biggest office of the Secret Service. It was the FEMA headquarters for the area. It was the headquarters for the Emergency Services Department for NYC, it was where Mayor Giuliani had his emergency office. It housed the SEC enforcement offices containing all the evidence in the Enron and WorldCom scandals (which was conveniently destroyed, ending all thoughts of prosecution.) And of course, we conspiracy nuts think it housed the planning center for the 911 attacks - which is the real reason it had to come down. ? Ahmed Nouri Raziak, 38, was handed over to representatives of the Associated Press at a U.S. military compound in Baghdad. He had been detained by U.S. and Iraqi forces at his home in the northern city of Tikrit on June 4, the agency said in a report from Baghdad. Raziak's release comes two days after the military freed an Iraqi cameraman for Reuters, Ali al-Mashhadani, who was held for three weeks without charge after being arrested while renewing his credentials at a U.S. military press office. As in Mashhadani's case, the U.S. military said it believed Raziak posed a threat, but concluded after a review that he did not. It did not elaborate. "We are glad Ahmed has been released," said Kathleen Carroll, AP's executive editor, according to the agency's report. "We will be seeking more specific information about why he was picked up and held and about his experience during h is incarceration." Last month, AP said it had been told by the military that Raziak would be held for at least six months. It said the military gave no explanation for the reversal. The U.S. military say the U.N. mandate authorizing its presence in Iraq allows it to hold anyone it deems a threat indefinitely. U.S. forces are now holding about 21,000 Iraqis without charge. In April the U.S. military freed Bilal Hussein, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Iraqi AP photographer who had been held for just over two years. (Reporting by Peter Graff; Editing by Caroline Drees) ? While he's at it, he's asking for their vote in the Sept. 9 primary. And he's reminding them he believes the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were orchestrated by the U.S. government. "I've had it up to here with the boring, cowardly, mealy mouthed, lying scalawags that call themselves politicians," Barrett says in the calls that will go out Tuesday. "If they call me one more time, I'm going...to tell them: 'You dirty, lying, thieving jackals of Washington, D.C., wasted $5 trillion on that idiotic war in Iraq and you destroyed our economy.'" He asks people to visit FireCongress.org, a site that urges people to vote against incumbents. Barrett also claims 9/11 was an inside job. Barrett was enmeshed in controversy when he taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his views on those terrorist attacks. Barrett slips into a falsetto voice during the recording so he can sound like a second person urging them to vote for Barrett. The call ends with: "At least he's not boring." In a second round of calls that will go out Sept. 8, the day before the primary, Barrett accuses U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) of lying about his views on the war, saying Kind is "100% pro war." Barrett faces fellow Libertarian Ben Olson III in the primary. The winner will face Kind and Republican Paul Stark, an Eau Claire home builder, in the Nov. 4 general election for the western Wisconsin district. http://www.radiodujour.com/people/barrett_kevin/ (This site allows for registered users to place comments!) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... John McCain's choice of running mate, President Bush has quietly moved to expand the reach of presidential power by ensuring that America remains in a state of permanent war. Buried in a recent proposal by the Administration is a sentence that has received scant attention -- and was buried itself in the very newspaper that exposed it Saturday. It is an affirmation that the United States remains at war with al Qaeda, the Taliban and "associated organizations." Part of a proposal for Guantanamo Bay legal detainees, the provision before Congress seeks to "acknowledge again and explicitly that this nation remains engaged in an armed conflict with Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and associated organizations, who have already proclaimed themselves at war with us and who are dedicated to the slaughter of Americans." The /New York Times/' page 8 placement of the article in its Saturday edition seems to downplay its importance. Such a re-affirmation of war carries broad legal implications that could imperil Americans' civil liberties and the rights of foreign nationals for decades to come. It was under the guise of war that President Bush claimed a legal mandate for his warrantless wiretapping program, giving the National Security Agency power to intercept calls Americans made abroad. More of this program has emerged in recent years, and it includes the surveillance of Americans' information and exchanges online. "War powers" have also given President Bush cover to hold Americans without habeas corpus -- detainment without explanation or charge. Jose Padilla , a Chicago resident arrested in 2002, was held without trial for five years before being convicted of conspiring to kill individuals abroad and provide support for terrorism. But his arrest was made with proclamations that Padilla had plans to build a "dirty bomb." He was never convicted of this charge. Padilla's legal team also claimed that during his time in military custody -- the four years he was held without charge -- he was tortured with sensory deprivation, sleep deprivation, forced stress positions and injected with drugs. /Times/ reporter Eric Lichtblau notes that the measure is the latest step that the Administration has taken to "make permanent" key aspects of its "long war" against terrorism. Congress recently passed a much-maligned bill giving telecommunications companies retroactive immunity for their participation in what constitutional experts see as an illegal or borderline-illegal surveillance program, and is considering efforts to give the FBI more power in their investigative techniques. "It is uncertain whether Congress will take the administration up on its request," Lichtblau writes. "Some Republicans have already embraced the idea, with Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, introducing a measure almost identical to the administration's proposal. 'Since 9/11,' Mr. Smith said, 'we have been at war with an unconventional enemy whose primary goal is to kill innocent Americans.'" If enough Republicans come aboard, Democrats may struggle to defeat the provision. Despite holding majorities in the House and Senate, they have failed to beat back some of President Bush's purported "security" measures, such as the telecom immunity bill. Bush's open-ended permanent war language worries his critics. They say it could provide indefinite, if hazy, legal justification for any number of activities -- including detention of terrorists suspects at bases like Guantanamo Bay (where for years the Administration would not even release the names of those being held), and the NSA's warantless wiretapping program. Lichtblau co-wrote the /Times/ article revealing the Administration's eavesdropping program along with fellow reporter James Risen. He notes that Bush's language "recalls a resolution, known as the Authorization for Use of Military Force, passed by Congress on Sept. 14, 2001... [which] authorized the president to 'use all necessary and appropriate force' against those responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks to prevent future strikes. That authorization, still in effect, was initially viewed by many members of Congress who voted for it as the go-ahead for the administration to invade Afghanistan and overthrow the Taliban, which had given sanctuary to Mr. bin Laden." "But the military authorization became the secret legal basis for some of the administration's most controversial legal tactics, including the wiretapping program, and that still gnaws at some members of Congress," he adds. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... BP Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp. and Shell, Europe's largest oil company, led producers shutting wells and whisking staff ashore. About 77 percent of Gulf oil production and 37 percent of natural-gas output was shut, the U.S. Minerals Management Service said in a statement today. The Louisiana Oil Port, the nation's largest crude-oil terminal, closed this morning.
