I was at a health care house meeting yesterday. It was one of numerous
(hundreds?) of such meetings across the country called for by the
Obama transition team asking for public input to the health care
dialogue *before* the inauguration.
The meeting was oversubscribed. It was a great example of grassroots
organizing. Bring people together with a common general concern. Hear
specific stories, brainstorm over solutions, identify skill sets, and
establish a forum for local leadership to emerge.
Imagine that, an administration inviting us to participate instead of
telling us to go shopping or making us all suspects in the War on
Terror.
Barack Obama comes from a tradition of community organizing that goes
back to Saul Alinsky. This showed in his campaign and it shows in the
appeal to the grassroots we are seeing in the transition agenda. It's
up to us to participate in this opportunity or to continue passively
as critics and outsiders to the process of governance.
The tent just got a lot bigger. That is going to take some getting
used to. I would much rather be involved in a dialogue with people
whose views oppose mine than isolate them as enemies.
