Fighting Bob spinoff moves to Palatine

A grassroots progressive gathering in Illinois inspired by Fighting  
Bob Fest in Wisconsin will take place in Palatine, Ill.

The event, called A Better Day 2008, is scheduled for Sept. 20 and  
will feature speakers, activists and community organizers. The public  
is invited to learn about and discuss issues, make connections and  
become involved in social benefit groups.

The nonpartisan gathering will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at  
Countryside Church Unitarian Universalist, 1025 N. Smith St., in  
Palatine.

Jim Kenney of Common Ground will present the morning keynote address,  
titled "Peace is Possible." Other speakers will address social and  
economic justice, sustainable living, support for veterans and ways  
of dealing with differences. Exhibitors in the conference hall will  
include environmentalists, advocates for economic reform and social  
justice, and local peace groups.

Programs will emphasize personal involvement, according to organizer  
Dr. Hal Snyder.
"We want to tell everyone, you can do something!" added Kat Doyle,  
like Snyder a member of the program committee.

A flyer for the event states: "A Better Day was inspired by Fighting  
Bob Fest, the annual Wisconsin extravaganza that brings thousands of  
fired-up progressive speakers, organizers and rabble-rousers to  
Baraboo every September."

This is the third year Illinois progressives have gathered, after  
Snyder and others attended Bob Fest, but it's the first time the  
event will be in Palatine.

This year's gathering is sponsored by Progressive Fest Illinois and  
the Adult Faith Development Council of the Countryside Church  
Unitarian Universalist.
