While we do see moves to bail out the rich while working people are
left in the cold, I think some fundamental supports have already been
pillaged and undermined. Bail-outs (Fannie & Freddie, e.g.) might
prevent or soften the collapse. We are now blackmailed after a large
part of the larceny has occurred, as in the S&L scandal under Reagan
and Bush I (remember the Keating Five including McCain as well as
Neil Bush's part in Silverado S&L).
In the documentary by Tim Bennett and Sally Erickson, "What a Way to
Go", the parallel is drawn on a larger scale - comparing the
materials economy and modern civilization to a building in which
people living on upper floors pull out bricks from below to keep
building upward.
