Yesterday's House vote on the bail-out bill was history in the
making. We only have a little of the story so far. I expect
mainstream analysis to be shallow and misleading.

Some notes:

1. The roll call vote (#674).

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll674.xml

The bill was defeated by right-wing Republicans (Mike Pence, etc.)
and progressive Democrats (Dennis Kucinich, Marcy Kaptur, Sheila
Jackson Lee, etc), but the split was not clean the way most House
votes have been over recent years.

2. Huge public interest in the floor debate.

C-Span's streaming web server could not handle the traffic of people
watching the debate live. The Library of Congress THOMAS web server
carried this notice:

NOTICE: Due to a high volume of traffic, some THOMAS users have
reported problems running searches. We are working on this issue.

What was the debate about?
On motion that the House agree to the Senate amendment to the House
amendment to the Senate amendment.

In detail:
On Concurring in Senate Amendment With An Amendment: H.R. 3997 To
amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide earnings
assistance and tax relief to members of the uniformed services,
volunteer firefighters, and Peace Corps volunteers, and for other
purposes.

Wow. People were watching this? In the same country where American
Idol was a hit?

The debate is viewable here - I'm not sure how long this link will work:

3. This seems genuinely to have been a surprise to the party leaders.

4. Alternative analysis.

a. Michael Moore - Congratulations, Corporate Crime Fighters! Coup
Averted for Three Days!

But what they didn't know was that hundreds of thousands of Americans
woke up yesterday morning and decided it was time for revolt. The
politicians never saw it coming...

b. Mike Ruppert - What Really Happened Today

This is now the fast crash scenario. It is further complicated by two
things...
