I have finally embarked on my 2009 Sofa-Surfing Tour of Fame (woo-hoo!). This means I'll be dancing across the country and back again over the next few months. I will be in NYC until mid February, then drive South to Baltimore,? on into Florida, and along the southern coast to California. I'll go up the west coast to Oregon, and we'll drive home through the Midwest and Toronto, returning to VT by early May.? William York Hyde will be traveling with me, so it's going to be quite a trip! Here's a Google map of the route. My goal is to meet people and have fun, so if you think of anyone I should know (or anyone we can crash with), please hook us up. I would love to perform at haflas etc, and/or guest teach classes and workshops.? I'll be posting regular updates on my blog, so you can travel vicariously along with us. So far, we've been in NYC since Christmas (helping my Mom recover from a knee replacement). The weather here has been vile: gray, snowy, windy, and cold, but probably nowhere near as vile as it is in VT, so I'm happy and thankful. In the last few weeks, I've taken classes with Elena and Dunya (her weeklong at Kripalu starts 2/8), had lunch with Joe Williams, attended a couple of concerts with Zikrayat, and performed in the subway at Union Square and Penn Station to benefit the homeless with Bastet Bellydance and Pacita Prasarn. We had so much fun - Jerry Bezdikian came and threw money! Kaeshi Chai invited me to perform at Je'Bon with Djinn and guest violin player, Chern Hwei (not to mention Karim Nagi and Sami Asmar). What an evening! I was tickled to get compliments from Dalia, Jehan Kemal, Jeniviva, and many other folks. Jehan's husband Hanna St. John took some great photos (one is attached), and I wrote a FlynnSpace NASA Grant to begin working on Medea in the spring (cross your fingers for me). Plus I just uploaded a couple of new videos to YouTube, with more to come: Raquy and the Cavemen (yay!) and Bitwannes Beek. While you're there, check out Dorit's cool Wonder Woman video. Lots of love! Alia PS: Save the date!? June 11-15, Amity and I are hosting Tamalyn Dallal in VT/NH. Are we good or what? Thank god Amity has posted them: http://raq-on.net/workshops.htm One important thing though: Amity is dancing March 7 in Bellows Falls. Here's the press release: "On Saturday night, March 7th at 7:30PM, Trei Arcusi, with Becky Ashenden (bass and santuri), Chuck Corman (kontra and guitar) and Miamon Miller (violin) plays the folk music of Transylvania and Greece. Trei Arcusi has performed all over New England and as far afield as New York City, Mendocino, CA and Buffalo Gap, WV. The trio specializes in Hungarian and Romanian village music. As a special treat, they've invited the wonderful belly dancer 'Amity' to join them for a special cameo appearance. Amity is well-known as both a performer and dance teacher. The performance takes place at Boccelli's Cafe (on Canal St) in Bellows Falls so come early and enjoy a fine meal. Tickets in advance ($10) are available at Boccelli's or Village Square Books in Bellows Falls. Tickets at the door are $12. For further information, please call 802/460-1152" Miamon, of Trei Arcusi, has sponsored live Arabic music in VT. I hope everyone nearby will support local music and Amity!
