Thank you for pointing that out, I wasn't really looking at this from a
resource perspective.  We must come from very different professional
backgrounds, as I work almost exclusively on servers running Java.  In
that environment, the extensibility and utility of XML outweighs the
cost of using an XML library every time.  My interest in IRC programming
has always been about writing bots that provide services and not
clients.
