Any serious encryption will require a key, as codemastr said. With no 
key, the encryption is nothing but a joke.

But it's possible to just exchange public keys over IRC and naively 
assume they haven't been tampered with, which is enough encryption for 
the casual user who just wants to be protected against packet sniffing. 
In that case he wouldn't even need to know what a key is - the client 
can generate one and exchange it automatically.
