I like this verse because it is such a good picture of where we are so 
often in our walk with God. We see ourselves as having so very little, 
while God is looking at us, shaking His head and saying, "If he only 
knew." "If she only understood."

Clearly, Saul didn't have a clue. The donkeys were gone. The food was 
gone. Nothing was going his way. So it seemed. But, in reality, 
everything was going his way. God was about to reverse everything about 
his life.

What do we have? While we are rummaging through our empty lunch sacks, 
God is arranging a feast. Just when we think our mission has failed, God 
is planning a coronation ceremony.
