David,
I think your concerns are valid. The increase in near-misses often seems to
herald the coming of a more serious incident.
I would echo your sentiments for everyone out there to be extra vigilant.
Promise your wife, husband, kids, cat, dog or whatever that you will come home
at the end of your shift.

Growing up in California, I was used to feeling little tremblors - small
earthquakes - that the old folks would tell you meant a big one was coming.
Most times the old folks were wrong, but right after a big one, we would be
reminded that little shakes had been occurring for a few days or weeks before.
Over the last couple of days, we have issued a flurry of CONCERN bulletins
for relatively minor events. When Roseann Krantz and I were taking care of
the network together, we noticed that a burst of activity like this could
presage a fatal crash. As the number of bulletins mounted, we would each take a
deep breath and wonder what was going to happen. Sometimes we were wrong.
I'm feeling little shakes right now. Do they mean anything? I can't say.
It probably isn't entirely rationale to post my feelings like this.
However, to humor me, would everyone please take some extra time right now
to insure you are doing it right? Rethink your weather, recheck your lists,
slow your pace a bit, and keep your eyes and ears open. Paranoia is not the
answer, but a healthy respect for hazards never hurts. Assuming you are safe
is not the same as insuring you are safe.
I'll be keeping my ear the ground, listening for more little shakes.
