I've used them as well in my former life as a stagehand. the meter has to be rather large so the folks in the back row can see what it is, and what the reading on it is. because of this, it is usually made not as an actual meter which reads the volume of the applause, but rather as a large prop with a stagehand or production assistant guesstimating the response of the audience and moving the "meter's" needle manually.
on the digital side of the question, you could do something with a series of light bulbs controlled offstage by a production assistant...

My husband works in television and says you are probably going to be hard pressed to find a device with a needle because it is such old technology. He said that when you would see a meter with a needle on television measuring an audience response there was a camera aimed at a particular instrument on an audio board. Everything now is probably going to be digital....

Greetings - odd question I realize, but as many on the list are presenters,
hoping for help -for my newest presentation, pediatric pearls & jeopardy
jewels, I'm trying to find an old fashioned audience applause meter or something
similar to help gauge audience screams/responses/etc
