Safety Officer
Training Workshop

A pre-conference training course offered in parallel with AMTC 2008

Now EXPANDED to two full
days with added content and
hands-on instruction and training

October 18-19, 2008

Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
1300 Nicollet Mall
Minneapolis, MN 55403

Safety Management Specialties is again pleased to offer its Safety
Officer Training Workshop as a pre-conference training session in
parallel with the 2008 Air Medical Transport Conference. This is the
course that has received consistently excellent reviews by attendees
of AMTC 2006 and 2007. Now, in 2008, it has been expanded to two full
days of training, and includes hands-on demonstration and practice
with safety program tools that air medical safety officers and
administrators can immediately begin to implement within their local
programs.

Air medical programs operate in hazardous environments and with unique
risks. Essential to reducing these risks are well-organized and
vigorous safety programs for both hospitals and air operators.
However, most safety programs underperform*they fail to meet their
goals or they fall short of their potential.

What are the keys to a successful safety program? Leadership,
knowledge, and a top-down emphasis on safety spearheaded by
knowledgeable safety officers and committed program managers. This
class is designed for all individuals who are responsible for program
safety at the local level. This includes designated safety officers
(pilot and non-pilot), program directors, and others.

The two-day curriculum will provide both experienced and novice safety
officers with resources and knowledge needed to design, implement, and
evaluate the effectiveness of their safety program. Participants will
acquire knowledge and tools for building a robust safety culture
within their organization, and will learn to identify their program's
safety deficiencies and high-risk areas. The workshop will provide
lecture and discussion of safety principles, case examples of
successful safety program models, and hands-on practice with safety
information collection, analysis, and interpretation. Exceptional air
medical safety practices will be highlighted and contrasted with those
that are substandard.

Workshop attendees will be provided with a course manual and other
support materials including:

* Safety program textbook
* Guidelines for implementing a safety management system
* Safety analysis and incident tracking templates
* Format and content guide for PAIPs
* Suggested formats for safety committee structure and minutes
* Internal safety audit forms
* OSHA standards manual
* Facility fire protection standards
* A course completion certificate

The Safety Officer Training Workshop is designed to meet all of the
training requirements proposed for basic safety officer certification
currently being considered by the AAMS safety committee.
