It is with some regret that I must inform you all that I need to step
down from this figure-head post of FRPS President. Someone else can
step in and take the group where they want, but I cannot fulfill that
position any more.
That said, you can still have this mail list and associated web site
left running (courtesy of Steve Parker) and there can still be photo
shoots and monthly meetings, but someone else can step in and organize
these things -- my direct involvement of pulling you all together will
have to come to an end.
It's been a long, slow and fun run. I just need to start this new year
by pushing myself harder in a new direction and not stay the course
we've been trudging these past 4 years now. So next Tuesday's meeting
will be my last as the "official" president of FRPS. Whether or not
there are meetings beyond next Tuesday is up to one of you. What do
you say?
Thanks for all the camaraderie and sharing these past four years. I
learned a lot and I hope you did so too. I know Steve is trying to
plan a visit back up to Ft Collins for the Rocky Mountain Raptor
Rehabilitation Center some time this Winter/Spring, but that's about
all I know going forward.
And if you ever want to go shooting, just give me a yell, I'll be
here, I'm not going away nor leaving photography.
Sincerely,
greggl

All,
After seeing Gregg's email, I thought I'd throw in my $0.02.
I know that our original intent for FRPS was a "dues-funded" formal
group that would meet, teach, critique, and most importantly, provide
an environment to learn from each other, hopefully growing
significantly in the process. It takes a lot of effort to do this, and
despite all of Gregg's efforts, he never could get that inertia
needed. I haven't been much help either, being on the road so much,
but that's my life.
If nobody's interested in taking on the group, I'll also need to make
sure that we shut down down the bank account that we opened in
preparation for the group, and dissolve the "business" we registered.
As Gregg mentioned, I'm more than willing to keep hosting the mailing
list, either in this format or via a slightly different web-based
version. I'll also continue to host the website. I know it doesn't get
much, if any, use but the list does occasionally serve a valuable
service. Does anybody feel strongly that we should keep the website
going? If not, I may shut that down.
Thoughts? Comments?
Sincerely,
Steve

First, I want to thank Gregg for all his hard work. I am sad to see him
step down.
We have all benefited and have enjoyed it.
I almost never participate in any dues funded organizations any more.
This is something akin to Groucho's comment that he would never be a
member of any organization that would have him as a member ;.)
I personally much prefer informal groups, usually smaller groups.
I would be glad to help out. I think the group has value.
I also think the mail list has value but think a web based version (more
like other forums) might serve better.
The website would be a convenient place to point to the forum, publish a
calendar, provide basic organizational info etc (much of which should
also be in "sticky" messages in the forum).
These times are tough. Many will lack the time or energy to participate
in anything not directly earning them a living or improving the quality
of their lives. Probably not a time to be asking folks to spend money
for something which is admittedly not an essential.
But, it is desirable, and at its best when it embraces the largest
possible participation and contribution.
We have of late had difficulty just getting folks to show up.
I believe the original goals of "meet, teach, critique, and most
importantly, provide an environment to learn from each other" are still
valid and can still be achieved, even without a dues funding mechanism.
If we need funding for some activity we can address that as we need - a
special speaker - we can charge admission or ask for donations in
advance, etc., We can do workshops on the same model, do field trips by
sharing expenses, ... pretty much as has been done.
The quality of the experience will determine its worth. If we start
seeing a huge increase in turn out, that is a good thing, and perhaps
then a formal funding mechanism could be devised.
I am seeing a lot of interest in alternative photographic processes
(which I guess now includes all non-digital). There is a renewed
interest in large format and ultra large format. I would like to see
more work presented and critiqued by colleagues. I am always up to
learning about some new photoshop trick, new tools, new equipment,
reviews, locations, etc.
I am considering shooting 8x10...
Are there folks that would like to present on a topic?
Is there particular interest in any specific subjects or techniques?
Other ideas?

Sorry to hear this. I agree with other comments that Gregg has done an
excellent job at organizing the group. I for one have not had the time
to commit.
Thanks Gregg for all you have done.

Greetings fellow photographers,
The New Year often brings transitions. After fives years with The Center
for Fine Art Photography, I will be moving on to new adventures.
Since founding the Center it has been my pleasure to have met many
people from around the world whose passion is photography. When
establishing the Center, I wanted to create an organization that would
offer creative and aspiring photographers with opportunities to present
their work to a world audience, and to provide programs conducted by
leaders in our art. Hopefully, with some success.
The Center for Fine Art Photography will continue in its mission to
promote the art of photography and foster the growth of creative
artists. I hope you will continue to support the Center in its efforts.
Wishing you all many creative moments.

Anyone up for shooting in Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend -
Saturday?
Several of us had talked about heading into the park Saturday AM to
photograph the Elk and whatever else that moves, and maybe take in some
landscapes while we're at it.
Please RSVP as early as you can...

For new ideas on shooting and with new people to shoot with, check out
this MeetUp group (attached below) I belong to. They're setting up a
photo shoot in El Dorado Canyon in mid-February and they're always
open to anyone with a camera. Good group of shooters too. I'm going to
try making it to this next event, if anyone wants to join me, please
holler.
Also, another topic came to my attention that sounds really
interesting: the Moab Photo Symposium
happens the last weekend in April. This one costs about $200 plus
travel and lodging and workshops, but it gets you out into a beautiful
area with a camera with nothing more to do than shoot and discuss and
learn. What could be better than that? Do we have any car-poolers?
Check out their outlines, instructors and workshops on their web site.
Happy shootin'
