If you have appropriate materials to loan for the exhibit or to donate for a permanent collection (books, buttons, fliers, posters, pamphlets. . .) please contact Judith at gardiner@uic.edu. Among the events planned are talks by Judy Norsigian of the original Boston Women's Health Book Collective and labor historian Dorothy Sue Cobble. See our Feminist Events and Action Calendar below for more details. *************************** Veteran Feminists of America (VFA) is assembling a directory of Second Wave activists The Veteran Feminists of America is an organization devoted to passing down the the history of second-wave feminism. As part of their work, they are assembling a directory of feminists who were active from 1963-1975. If you qualify and would like to be included in their directory, you may download an application form from the Herstory site at http://www.cwluherstory.com/weblog.php . Instructions are included in the form. For more info about VFA, visit their website at http://www.vfa.us/ *************************** Remembering Irene Peslikis 1943-2002 Irene Peslikis was a feminist artist who was one of the principal founders and organizers of the women's art movement. She organized the first show of second-wave women artists, taught the first Women & Art course on a college campus, at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, and was a founder of the first feminist art school, the Feminist Art Institute, which ran a full-time radical feminist art education program for women for years. Irene was a founding member of Redstockings and one of the organizers of the Redstocking Speak out on Abortion in NYC , a key event in the struggle to legalize abortion. We have a more detailed remembrance of Irene's life written by Roz Baxandall that is posted on our Feminist Salon. We join Irene's family and friends in mourning her death. *************************** CWLU Herstory Project volunteers attend a special pre-release showing of the "The Hours" The film "The Hours" is a complex film that interweaves the lives of three different women living in three different eras. The film is built around the English writer Virginia Woolf (Nichole Kidman) who is struggling to write her novel Mrs. Dalloway as she tries keep the demons of insanity at bay. Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) is a post WWII California suburban housewife reading the novel in the midst of the cultural desert where she is slowly suffocating. Clarissa (Meryl Streep) is ferociously trying to hold on to the life of a dying poet in contemporary NY. These three lives are woven together by the character of Virginia Woolf whose sheer intensity is at once awe inspiring and even terrifying. All of the actors earned their paychecks, but Nichole Kidman was especially impressive as Virginia Woolf. Her movements and expressions are sharp and angular as if she were always somewhere else, being jerked back into our world against her will. The Herstory volunteers who attended the showing generally gave it high marks in our thoroughly unscientific poll. See it for yourself and then comment on the film at our Feminist Salon-- http://www.cwluherstory.org/phpweb/ *************************** How is our web site traffic these days? We had a busy month in December with nearly 32,000 pages viewed. Site traffic dropped off as we approached Christmas and students began focusing on family and personal time. Some of the search terms people used to find us were: women's liberation movement women's liberation abortion rights rock band photos feminist music feminist posters post feminism grand coolie dam abortion story why i want a wife socialist feminism feminist quotations jeanette rankin political buttons national black feminist organization poems about abortion female psychology inducing miscarriage *************************** This month's Feminist Salon poll We have a new poll up on our Feminist Salon, so please vote. The question is: If abortion is outlawed, should feminists organize a new underground movement to provide safe abortions? You may vote at http://www.cwluherstory.org/phpweb/ *************************** The Herstory Project still needs interns. Volunteer now! Graduate and undergraduate students are needed to write, edit, research, interview, do audio/video, add documents, do publicity and lots more. Our projects are exciting and challenging. You can pretty much design your own project or work with our suggestions. If you need academic credit, you will have to work that out with your professors, but we're willing to help. We are a project of the UIC Center for Research on Women and Gender. Dr. Margaret "Peg" Strobel is our primary academic contact person. *************************** SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE? We added the history of the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health to the Archives section. Former CWLUer Jenny Knauss was its executive director for many years. One such performance was at Winona State University in Minnesota. The play got rave reviews and attracted considerable media attention. Another was at Florida State University, where it played to packed houses and received a very positive response. If you would like to organize a performance of the "Jane: Abortion and the Underground", please contact Paula Kamen at paulak2289@aol.com. The Herstory Project can send you digital files of the original 1999 world premiere play poster for you to adapt. *************************** New Herstory Project committee is working on a history of the women's health movement in Chicago Several former CWLU health activists and supporters have been meeting to write a history of the second-wave women's health movement in Chicago. Planning is still in the very early stages, but people are hopeful that new material can be added to the web site and that perhaps even a book will emerge. Primary documents related to the women's health movement exist at the Northwestern's McCormick Library, the Chicago Historical Society and in peoples' private collections. The group is already organizing a web based catalog of relevant materials and plans to collaborate online to share ideas and drafts for articles. If you have any collections of old leaflets, meeting notes, pamphlets photos etc. that relate to the women's health movement in Chicago, please e-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org. The group has no funding and expects that progress will be slow, but people are determined to tell this story. *************************** Naomi Weisstein hospitalized and would love to hear from you Naomi was a founding member of the Chicago Women's Liberation Union and the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band. Made during the McCarthy period, the cast and crew were subjected to constant political harassment and the film was blocked from normal mass distribution. It depicts a strike by largely Mexican-American mineworkers in New Mexico and the key role of the women in organizing . It became a hit among the 1960's activists and is now considered a classic of socially conscious filmmaking. A visually enhanced DVD version of the old 16 mm film is now available. As with many DVD's it has extra features such as background material on the production, cast and other personnel involved. The Hollywood Ten documentary is also included. These two extraordinary writers have teamed up to create a stunning new anti-war roadshow, a kind of one-on-one political poetry slam, in which they each speak directly to events as they unfold, using poetry to crack open the news and engage our hearts, minds and voices. As the nation wrestles with questions of war and peace, terror and justice, patriotism and rogue nationhood, they will be touring the United States, broadcasting their work as they write it, and engaging in poetic conspiracy with local poets across the country, especially from Muslim and/or Arab communities and other communities under attack. This very original play by Naomi Weisstein, Amy Kesselman, Sherry Jenkins and others was first performed at the founding convention of the CWLU in 1969. There are several versions floating around. We have one of them. Reviving this play might make a good women's studies project because it certainly captures the spirit of the times. We added an article from "Black Maria" (the CWLU literary magazine) about how to organize consciousness raising groups to the Consciousness section of the archive. The CWLU helped organize a large International Women's Day march in 1974. We added a report on this event to the Organizing section of the Archive. The Abortion Defense Fund was set up to defend the Jane members who had been arrested for performing illegal abortions. We added a letter from the Fund to the Jane Documents section of the Special Feature. We updated our Feminist Salon with several new articles including a remembrance of the late Ginni Clemmens, the anti-war protest of a woman basketball player, an anti-war statement by the National Women's Studies Association and a long blurb about the book "Women, Power, and AT&T." Our new poll question on the Feminist Salon is: "Has feminism become a truly multi-racial movement?" Cast your vote and leave a comment on this crucial issue. In our last poll, respondents overwhelmingly supported the idea of a new underground abortion movement if abortion is made illegal. All polls are archived and you are invited to review them at any time. Visits to the Herstory site are increasing. Currently, people view an average of 1400 pages per day. Last month we served a total of 35,000 pages. *************************** NEW BOOK! "Women, Power, and AT&T: Winning Rights in the Workplace" by Lois Kathryn Herr (Northeastern University Press) During the 1970's many women entered the corporate world for the first time including former 7th grade teacher Lois Kathyrn Herr. The crude sexism she encountered caused her to join with other women in a complex battle that involved NOW, the EEOC and their own vigorous efforts. Her inside view of how change really happens in the corporate world is still very relevant today. *************************** WEB SURFIN' WITH THE HERSTORY PROJECT Here are some web links of interest to feminists. The UIC Center for Research on Women and Gender along with other sponsors held a conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the ground breaking women's health book, "Our Bodies, Ourselves". Originally stapled together on cheap newsprint at 35 cents a copy, the book has been revised countless times and is currently translated into 19 languages. Keynote speaker Judy Norsigian was one of the original members of the Boston Women's Health Collective (now called Our Bodies Ourselves) which first published the book. Other conference speakers included Courtney Bell of the Chicago Women's Health Center, Evette Cardona of Amigas Latinas, Kathleen Ennen of the Illinois Nurses Association, Claudia Fegan of the Health & Medicine Policy Research Group and Beatriz Ponce de Leon of the Illinois Caucus of Adolescent Health. A number of former CWLUers attended the conference and some later joined Judy Norsigian and other conference attendees for dinner at a local Italian restaurant. Herstory Project members were able to discuss how best to document the history of the women's health movement in Chicago with Judy Norsigian, who was very supportive of their efforts. *************************** Jennifer Abod visited Chicago to promote her film, "The Edge of Each Other's Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde" Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was the author of 15 books and was poet Laureate of New York State from 1991-1993. She consistently challenged all forms of discrimination in the social movements she herself participated in: Black Arts and Black Liberation, Women's Liberation, Black Feminism, and Lesbian and Gay Liberation. A staunch internationalist, she connected women across the U.S.A., the Caribbean, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. She died in 1992 after a courageous 14 year struggle against breast and liver cancer. The Women in the Director's Chair Film Festival presented "The Edge of Each Other's Battles" on March 23rd along with a special guest appearance of film maker Jennifer Abod. The documentary was emotionally and intellectually engaging , as we see how Audre Lord constantly challenged herself and those around her not to succumb to society's ugliest prejudices. Many of the younger people in the audience were not familiar with Audre Lorde and spoke out during the discussion period about what an extraordinary person she was and how they needed to become familiar with her work. Jennifer Abod is eager to get the video out to film festivals, conferences and schools. Visit Jennifer's website at http://www.jenniferabod.com for details. The Herstory Project plans to add a review of the film to our site. Jennifer was one of the members of the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band. Her sister Susan was in the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band. Both are longtime friends and supporters of the CWLU Herstory Project. *************************** Canadian filmmaker seeks "empowered" virgin stories Paula Kamen, author of "Her Way: Young Women Remake The Sexual Revolution", reports that a Canadian filmmaker is interested in doing a documentary on celibacy and virginity and would like to interview young women about their choices in that area. According to Paula, you don't have to be a virgin to talk to her.The people interviewed have to just able to tell "interesting or unusual" stories about their own choices in that realm, and have felt "empowered" about their decisions in some way. Contact Paula at paulak2289@aol.com if this sounds like something you might be interested in. *************************** New essays at JoFreeman.com Longtime feminist writer Jo Freeman has posted two new essays: an article on the recent Code Pink anti-war demonstration in Washington and an article on women in the 1912 election. The Code Pink article has original photos Jo took at the demonstration and the 1912 piece has photos and graphics from the time period. Jo will be a featured speaker at the Nordic American Studies Conference to be held in Trondheim, Norway, Aug. 6-9. Her book, "At Berkeley in the Sixties" is due out this fall. We will be publishing a short excerpt on the Feminist Salon soon. Visit her website at http://www.jofreeman.com. Jo is prolific and original writer and is constantly adding new material. *************************** "Life's a Stitch" is now a musical production "Life's a Stitch" edited by Anne Safran, is a hilarious book of women's humor. Now Anne has teamed up with Adryan Russ, Kay Cole and others to turn the collection into a full fledged stage musical complete with a chorus called "The Stitches". It opens June 14, 2003, at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA. The musical "Life's a Stitch", like the book, will be a benefit for breast cancer research. CWLU Herstory Project members Estelle Carol and Bob Simpson have several of their feminist labor cartoons in the book. *************************** Announcing a writing contest: Women's Voices in WarZones Since Sept. 11, 2001 there has been constant public reference to concepts of terror, war, and security, but little debate about their meaning, which differs from place to place and person to person. And the voices of women and girls, both within the US and in the rest of the world, have been conspicuously absent from the discussion. To bring forward women's ideas on this subject, and enable them to be heard in the public arena, Women's WORLD, a global free speech network of feminist writers, is initiating a writing contest which will be co-sponsored by the The Nation Institute, whose mission is to defend freedom of expression and strengthen the independent media. The subject is Women's Voices in War Zones and the deadline is May 1. That's short notice, but we were delayed in getting out this newsletter. Visit http://www.wworld.org for more details. The president of Women's WORLD is Meredith Tax ( a former CWLUer). *************************** SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE? We added an article from "Black Maria" (a literary magazine associated with the CWLU) about life in women's prisons to the Consciousness Archive. The article has a very powerful poem called,"No, Lady. Prison didn't improve me none." Sterilization abuse was an important issue for the CWLU which actively supported the Committee to End Sterilization Abuse (CESA). We added the original Statement of Purpose from CESA to the Health Archive. We also added a document from the Committee for Puerto Rican Decolonization about sterilization as a socio-political weapon in Puerto Rico. We updated our Feminist Salon with several new articles including: - an article on the 30th anniversary of "Our Bodies, Ourselves" - a research paper on women's sexuality and aging - a research article on mifepristone - a letter from Chicago's own Kathy Kelly who spent the Iraq war in Baghdad as a volunteer for Voices in the Wilderness - a news article on the importance of women's friendships to physical health (special thanks to Betsy Martens for passing that on) - a news story on the debate over abortion in Nicaragua - A 5000 year old poem from an ancient Iraqi woman lamenting the scourge of war Last month we had nearly 40,000 pages viewed by visitors. Not all of the site gets a lot of hits though. We were forced to suspend our Feminist Calendar because of low visitor traffic. We will bring it back for Women's Month next year. We think a Chicagoland feminist events calendar is a good idea, but we would need more support from other feminist organizations. Feel free to e-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org if you have ideas . The Feminist Majority recently announced a free daily news service that may be added to any web site on the Internet. We now subscribe to it on the CWLU Herstory homepage. If you would like to add feminist news and activist alerts to your website, it only takes a couple of lines of computer code. Visit http://www.feminist.org for more info. *************************** BOOK! "Common Sense and a Little Fire: Women and Working-Class Politics in the United States, 1900-1965" by Annelise Orleck (Univ of North Carolina Press) Her book is about the powerful and neglected role of women in the emergence of organized labor, the New Deal welfare state, adult education, and the modern women's movement. She is now living in the Pacific Northwest and is the author of several books. Here is Judith in her own words: Hello CWLU people ..... I'm writing to say that I'm looking for a publisher for a book called Maternal Instinct: poems and monologues about abortion, adoption, the biotechnology of birth and related issues ..... a good number of these pieces have already been published in journals, anthologies and a couple of international women's health newsletters; one long piece about Jane, now published several times, was part of an off-off Broadway performance celebrating the 30th anniversary of Roe in January ...... one section of the book is drawn directly from my work as a Jane -- which is, of course, the foundation of the consciousness and knowledge that made it both possible and necessary for me to write this book now ... I got lots of help with the manuscript (grants, residencies, critical feedback from other writers) for which I am enormously grateful, and am now eager to get the book out .... I read from the manuscript at all the organizations/events where I am a speaker, as well as at gigs where I appear simply as a writer, and the response is always intense - because, I believe, people want so much to think and talk about these issues in serious ways, not in polarized sound-bites .... Naturally I'm sending queries out in the usual way (I've even played the now-common po-biz game of entering contests, and have copped a few "finalists") ... but, reading the most recent CWLU email newsletter made me think to ask if any of you - also out there reading this newsletter, have any suggestions - or connections! I'm thinking a Chicago or Illinois press might be especially interested, but who knows? Maybe it'll get published first in Italy or Ireland, and then come back .... we'll see..... My thanks for your consideration and attention ... They chose the Graphics Collective poster, "Abortion is a Personal Decision, not a Legal Debate" to add to their timeline of milestones in ethical design. Estelle Carol directed this poster when she was an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. It was her first project for the then fledging Chicago Women's Graphics Collective. *********************************** SUNNY CHAPMAN quoted in the Orlando (Fla) Weekly Sunny Chapman is a NY based reproductive choice activist and documentary film maker. She also appeared in the 1995 film Jane: An Abortion Service. Sunny was quoted in an article called "Choose Lies" about the so-called "pregnancy counseling centers". You may read the entire article at http://www.orlandoweekly.com/news/story.asp?ID=3906 . Sunny has two documentary films on the same subject available on her web site at http://www.sunnychapman.com. These "centers" are actually a front for the anti-abortion movement and often have ties with with extreme right-wing fundamentalist groups. ************************************* CHICAGO WOMEN'S HEALTH MOVEMENT HISTORY GROUP For the past several months a small group of former CWLU health activists and their supporters have been meeting to develop a history of the Chicago women's health movement. They have been busy cataloging numerous documents and have conducted taped interviews of former CWLUer Jenny Knauss. There are plans to transfer these tapes to digital format so they can be edited and then transcribed. The group is also building a collaborative web site where they share their document listings, audio files and writing projects for review and critiques. *************************** SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE? We added the January 1969 issue of "Voice of the Women's Liberation Movement." Edited by Jo Freeman, this was the first national women's liberation periodical. We have 4 issues up and 2 more in our paper files, but we are missing the June 1969 Issue #7. If you can send us a clear xerox of that issue or are willing to trust us with an original (we'll return it after we scan it), we would be deeply appreciative. E-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org if you can help. Please visit http://www.cwluherstory.org/CWLUArchive/voice.html We added "View from the Loop", an excellent introduction to the Second Wave women's health movement in Chicago. Written in the late 1970's ( e-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org if you can pin down the exact date), it covers many of the CWLU health projects of the time. Please visit http://www.cwluherstory.org/CWLUArchive/loop.html We added a description of the diverse organizations who attended one of the earliest national women's liberation conferences. We think it was the Lake Villa conference in November of 1969. E-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org if you can help us confirm that. http://www.cwluherstory.org/CWLUArchive/natconference.html We also added more books and improved the navigation to our online book catalog at http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUMarket/books.html. If you know of any cool books by former CWLUers, books that mention the CWLU, or Chicago women's histories that we should include, please contact us with the info. We updated our Feminist Salon at http://www.cwluherstory.com/phpweb/ with several new articles including: - a review by Thomas Jepson of "Women, Power and ATT" - an editorial on why Iraqi reconstruction must include women - a discussion of modern feminism by punkerslut - a remembrance of Nina Simone - an article on the sex discrimination suit against Walmart Our Feminist Salon spotlights modern feminism. The meeting approved a plan to draft a fundraising letter to circulate to friends and colleagues in the feminist community. Contributors will receive Women Graphics Collective posters as gifts. We will also explore the possibility of selling mugs with Chicago Women's Graphics Collective designs on them. At the time of the meeting, the Herstory Project bank account had $3,283. Since then we have purchased a 13 x 19 archival inkjet color printer to reproduce Chicago Women's Graphics Collective posters. We expect start-up costs for that to be around $1300 which includes $860 for the printer. We have already printed a few test posters and they look great! We are in the process of obtaining a PayPal account which allow us to take secure credit card orders and contributions over the Web. Hopefully, by September or October 2003, we'll finally have the poster reprinting project ready to roll. *************************** CWLU HERSTORY PROJECT IS HELPING ANNE ENKE WITH HER NEW MANUSCRIPT University of Wisconsin professor Anne Enke is writing a book entitled "Locating Feminist Activism: Sexuality, Race, and Contested Space in the Upper Midwest". The book is organized around the spaces connected to women's activism. Part of her research involves the Chicago Women's Liberation Union. So far we've aided Anne by helping set up interviews, sharing names of contact people and duplicating documents she needs. Anne is especially interested in the CWLU sports program. If you were active in the sports program and would like to help her out, let us know at infogal@cwluherstory.org and we'll pass your name along. She has a special request: If you visited the Ms. Lounge bar, or played with the Ms. Lounge team she would very much like to hear your recollections. Ann uses the CWLU Herstory website in her classes at the University of Wisconsin and we are very excited to be working with her. *************************** THE CHICAGO WOMEN'S HEALTH CENTER HAS AN ORAL HISTORY PROJECT The Chicago Women's Health Center was founded in 1975 and has roots in the CWLU's health projects of the time. The CWLU Herstory Project is supporting their efforts by sharing resources and documents. *************************** THE CHICAGO WOMEN'S HEALTH HISTORY GROUP CONTINUES ITS WORK Herstory Project's Health History Committee has decided to assemble an in-depth memoir of Chicago women's health activist Jenny Knauss. Kathy Mallin and Coral Norris are taping interviews with Jenny. Bob Simpson has offered to convert the audio tapes to digital format and help edit them. After editing is completed, the Committee will convert the taped interviews into a transcript. From there, they can be turned into a memoir that could be published on paper and on the web. Estelle Carol, Mardge Cohen, Amy Laiken and Laurie Crawford are also working on the project. Jenny Knauss was recently featured on a WGN-TV news story about medical students pairing with Alzheimer's patients for the benefit of both. This very special program is sponsored by Northwestern University. HELP IDENTIFY JO FREEMEN'S PHOTOS Longtime feminist writer Jo Freeman has posted 4 sets of photos she took of events circa 1969-1970. She is asking E-Zine readers to look at the photos and provide information on the events, including exact dates and identifications of participants and organizers. Reports from actual participants are especially welcome. She would like to write historical essays about all three and any personal recollections, press clippings, leaflets etc. would be very helpful. The FOUR photo sets are: 1- The Chicago ERA march (Date?) http://www.uic.edu/orgs/cwluherstory/jofreeman/futurephotos/ChiERA/ There are photos of several people and a nice picture of former CWLUer Heather Booth holding her baby . A CWLU banner is clearly visible in several photos and one participant is proudly displaying a Graphics Collective poster. Can you identify the other people in these photos? When was the march held? Who organized it? 2- The protest at the American Medical Association: Who? What? When? In the January 1972 issue, Elaine's mom answered her. You may read the letters online at http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/motherdaughter.html. Last month Dial Press contacted us to request permission to print these letters in a book that collects American women's letters from 1776 to the present. We forwarded the permission request to Elaine. Dial also asked us for permission to publish a 1968 letter about Black activism and reproductive rights from Patricia Robinson. We obtained her letter from a pamphlet in our archives, so we were unable to help them with permissions. We have gotten several queries from people looking for Patricia Robinson. If anyone has information about her, please pass it on to us. The 1975 Socialist Feminist Conference held in Yellow Springs OH brought together 1500 women to discuss issues of women's liberation. You may read a CWLU report on the conference at http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/socfem1975.html . We posted a chapter from Jo Freeman's upcoming book, "At Berkeley in the 60's" in the Memoirs section. Jo's new book tells the story of her coming of age as a political activist during the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley. The chapter we posted tells how she hitchhiked across America to support the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party at the 1964 Democratic Convention. We updated our Feminist Salon at http://www.cwluherstory.com/phpweb/ with several new articles including: - an appeal from Bitch magazine for subscribers - a review of the new book, "Women in Viet Nam: An Oral History" - a review of the new film "Lilya-4-Ever", a powerful indictment of international sex trafficking - an article about combatting domestic violence in Ecuador - an announcement of a 2004 pro-choice March on Washington - an article comparing the lives of Rachel Corrie and Jessica Lynch - an article on women in the Vienna Philharmonic - an article on why the Scandinavian social democracies are the best places to be a mom - an article on the harassment of gay college students Our Feminist Salon spotlights modern feminism. Thanks to everyone for your financial support! *************************** GENERATIONS OF FEMINISM CONFERENCE PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO UC femininsts are organizing a special conference in February to address the complex issues related to feminism in the 21st century. Among the invited panelists are Dorothy Allison, Sabrina Craig, Judith Halberstam, Sharon Holland, Nancy Miller, Kate Millet. Aihwa Ong, Lynn Speigel, Gayatri Spivak and Michelle Wallace. Conference organizers hope to produce a moment of reflection - both by listening to our distinguished panelists and generating discussion between panelists and audience members about the future(s) of feminism. We'll keep you posted as more details emerge. *************************** THE HERSTORY SITE AND THE WEBLOG MOVEMENT Weblogs or "blogs" are public online journals where people communicate just about anything they wish to share with the world. A number of young women have adopted various Graphics Collective poster images to proclaim their feminist beliefs and lesbian pride on their weblogs. This is not strictly a US phenomenon. We've seen weblogs in Russian and Arabic that have used Graphics Collective images. We certainly encourage people to use these images for their personal blogs. A link back to http://www.cwluherstory.org is deeply appreciated, but not required. *************************** JO FREEMAN'S BOOK -- AT BERKELEY IN THE SIXTIES -- IS A SELECTION OF THE HISTORY BOOK CLUB The History Book Club, a division of the Book-of-the-Month Club, has selected At Berkeley in the Sixties for one of its paperback book features. The History Book Club is a division of the Book of the Month Club. Jo Freeman, a well known writer and independent feminist scholar, was one of the leaders of the Free Speech movement at Berkeley in 1964. The book tells of her coming of age as an activist in the early 1960's, a period often overlooked and overshadowed by events of the late 1960's. You may read an chapter from her book on our Feminist Salon at http://www.cwluherstory.com/phpweb/article.php?sid=76 . The book should be available by January 2004. We will include a link to it in our Feminist Marketplace. *************************** LUNAFEST FILM FESTIVAL TOURS THE USA The Third Annual Lunafest Film Festival has been on a 25-city tour since September, bringing the latest in independent women's film making to new audiences. The tour will benefit breast cancer research. LUNAFEST is dedicated to unlocking an important door for women directors, by offering a national platform for artists to exhibit their work. Only two women have ever been nominated for an Oscar for achievement in directing (neither has won), which is not surprising considering that recent studies by the Directors Guild of America show that women film directors comprise only 7.4 percent of the total number of working directors. Since its inception, LUNAFEST has screened the films of 18 female directors before thousands of people nationwide. The festival is sponsored by Lunabar, a popular nutrition bar. The festival is scheduled to arrive in Chicago in January 16th at DePaul University. Please visit http://www.lunabar.com for more info. *************************** GOLDENROD MUSIC STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 28 YEARS Goldenrod Music is excited to announce the launch of their new web site at http://www.goldenrod.com. Goldenrod has been a women owned and operated music company for over 28 years. Goldenrod started off as a small distribution company that was operated out of the owner's basement. It now distributes artists like Ani Difranco, Holly Near, and Melissa Ferrick to name a few. They are dedicated to supporting women artists and creating a place to house the many talented female voices out there. Please share the excitement with them and visit their new web site. If you would like to see them in person, check them out at one of the many great women's music festivals across the U.S. *************************** POLITICAL CARTOONIST ANN TELNAES WINS NATIONAL PRESS FOUNDATION AWARD Ann Telnaes was named the Berryman Cartoonist of the Year 2003, one of the most prestigious awards for editorial cartoonists. Ann Telnaes draws a Commentoon for Women's eNews each week that is one of the site's most popular features. You may see her work at http://www.womensenews.org/ . *************************** SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE? We have been focused on reissuing Women's Graphics Collective images, so we have not added any new documents. We have also been working hard on our online shopping cart system which is mostly completed, but not yet public. We updated our Feminist Salon at http://www.cwluherstory.com/phpweb/ with new articles including: - a report on the resurgence of feminism in Europe - a story about two young high school women who were suspended for kissing in an anti-homophobia protest - a critical look at a recent dismal NY Times article about women "opting out" of careers - an announcement of the Lunafest women's film series which benefits breast cancer research - an announcement about Goldenrod Music's new website Our Feminist Salon spotlights modern feminism. We urge you to contribute news, essays, poems, reviews, editorials and fiction that you may have written. We're open to just about anything feminist related. We get a modest, but steady stream of visitors. *************************** BOOK! Dorothy Day: Portraits by Those Who Knew Her by Rosalie Riegle This new oral history of radical Catholic activist Dorothy Day includes experiences, many of them humorous, about the unique characters, role models and lessons learned in trying to adopt an early Christian communal attitude to charity and bring it to the streets of New York City. Dorothy Day was a co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement which combines direct action pacifism with direct service to the poor. The book has many photos. *************************** WEB SURFIN' WITH THE HERSTORY PROJECT Here are some web links of interest to feminists. Please send us your favorite links.
