Jane helps mark the 30th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade

Paula Kamen's play about the CWLU's Abortion Counseling Service,
"Jane: Abortion and the Underground", was performed at several
colleges during the month of January to commemorate the 30th
anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.

One such performance was at Winona State University in Minnesota. The
play got rave reviews and attracted considerable media attention.
Another was at Florida State University, where it played to packed
houses and received a very positive response.

If you would like to organize a performance of the "Jane: Abortion
and the Underground", please contact Paula Kamen at
paulak2289 at aol.com. The Herstory Project can send you digital files
of the original 1999 world premiere play poster for you to adapt.

New Herstory Project committee is working on a history of the women's
health movement in Chicago

Several former CWLU health activists and supporters have been meeting
to write a history of the second-wave women's health movement in
Chicago. Planning is still in the very early stages, but people are
hopeful that new material can be added to the web site and that
perhaps even a book will emerge.

Primary documents related to the women's health movement exist at the
Northwestern's McCormick Library, the Chicago Historical Society and
in peoples' private collections. The group is already organizing a
web based catalog of relevant materials and plans to collaborate
online to share ideas and drafts for articles.

If you have any collections of old leaflets, meeting notes, pamphlets
photos etc. that relate to the women's health movement in Chicago,
please e-mail infogal at cwluherstory.org. The group has no funding and
expects that progress will be slow, but people are determined to tell
this story.

Naomi Weisstein hospitalized and would love to hear from you

Naomi was a founding member of the Chicago Women's Liberation Union
and the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band. She is also the author
of the classic feminist work, "Psychology Constructs the Female". A
scientist by trade, Naomi's pioneering work in visual perception is
considered brilliant in her field. She has been battling Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome since the early 1980's, but despite the severity of
her illness, has continued to write and is an active member of the
Herstory Project.

Naomi was recently hospitalized with stomach problems and would love
to get e-mail from you. Her husband Jesse Lemisch reads her e-mail to
her. You may send greetings to utopia1 at attglobal.net.

JoFreeman.com adds historic photos of the 1967 Pentagon March

With thousands of other Americans, feminist scholar Jo Freeman
marched on the Pentagon in October 1967 to protest the war in Viet
Nam. She took photos and now these photos, along with her account of
the march, may be be viewed at
http://www.jofreeman.com/photos/Pentagon67.html . Jo also has three
additional personal accounts of the Pentagon March from other
participants, including one from Herstory Project member Bob Simpson.

Jo has photo histories of other famous civil rights, anti-war and
feminist events. She is inviting people who participated in any of
these to submit their own personal accounts for possible publishing
on her site. Visit http://www.jofreeman.com/photos.htm for more
details.

"Salt of the Earth" is now available on DVD

"Salt of the Earth" is a 1950's film with a strong feminist message.
Made during the McCarthy period, the cast and crew were subjected to
constant political harassment and the film was blocked from normal
mass distribution. It depicts a strike by largely Mexican-American
mineworkers in New Mexico and the key role of the women in organizing
. It became a hit among the 1960's activists and is now considered a
classic of socially conscious filmmaking.

A visually enhanced DVD version of the old 16 mm film is now
available. As with many DVD's it has extra features such as
background material on the production, cast and other personnel
involved. The Hollywood Ten documentary is also included. Available
from http://www.pioneer-ent.com

The Herstory Project still needs interns. Volunteer now!

Graduate and undergraduate students are needed to write, edit,
research, interview, do audio/video, add documents, do publicity and
lots more. Our projects are exciting and challenging. You can pretty
much design your own project or work with our suggestions.

If you need academic credit, you will have to work that out with your
professors, but we're willing to help. We are a project of the UIC
Center for Research on Women and Gender. Dr. Margaret "Peg" Strobel
is our primary academic contact person.

SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE?

We added articles to the Classic Feminist Writings Section
including the original 1966 NOW Statement of Purpose plus articles
by Ellen DuBois, Shulamith Firestone, Roberta Lynch, Carol Downer and
Barbara Ehrenreich.

We updated our Feminist Salon with several new articles including a
history of the Willmar 8, the Bush attacks on Title IX, the dismal
record of Dr. David Hager, Jo Freeman's account of the huge anti-war
march in Washington, a teenage feminist's look at sexism today, an
essay on women & war by Starhawk and a proposal by Aurora Levins
Morales for a national artists' strike against the war.

Our poll question on the Feminist Salon is: If abortion is outlawed,
should feminists organize a new underground movement to provide safe
abortions? The Yes votes far outnumber the No votes. We will be
putting a new poll up at the end of February. E-mail
infogal at cwluherstory.org with suggestions.

Although it probably did not play at your local multiplex, the film
"Naturally Native" got some nice reviews. Telling the story of 3
Native American sisters who try to start a cosmetics business, it is
the first film to be totally financed by Native American sources.
Actress Valerie Red Horse wrote the script.
