CWLU HERSTORY MEETING ON JULY 13: LAUNCHES PLANS FOR NEW FUNDRAISING DRIVE
CWLU Herstory Board, Steering Committee and supporters attending were
Peg Strobel, Jenny Knauss, Coral Norris, Amy Laikin, Bob Simpson,
Mary Ann Lupa and Estelle Carol.
The meeting approved a plan to draft a fundraising letter to
circulate to friends and colleagues in the feminist community.
Contributors will receive Women Graphics Collective posters as gifts.
We will also explore the possibility of selling mugs with Chicago
Women's Graphics Collective designs on them.
At the time of the meeting, the Herstory Project bank account had
$3,283. Since then we have purchased a 13 x 19 archival inkjet color
printer to reproduce Chicago Women's Graphics Collective posters. We
expect start-up costs for that to be around $1300 which includes $860
for the printer.
We have already printed a few test posters and they look great! We
are in the process of obtaining a PayPal account which allow us to
take secure credit card orders and contributions over the Web.
Hopefully, by September or October 2003, we'll finally have the
poster reprinting project ready to roll.

CWLU HERSTORY PROJECT IS HELPING ANNE ENKE WITH HER NEW MANUSCRIPT
University of Wisconsin professor Anne Enke is writing a book
entitled "Locating Feminist Activism: Sexuality, Race, and Contested
Space in the Upper Midwest". The book is organized around the spaces
connected to women's activism. Part of her research involves the
Chicago Women's Liberation Union. So far we've aided Anne by helping
set up interviews, sharing names of contact people and duplicating
documents she needs.
Anne is especially interested in the CWLU sports program. If you were
active in the sports program and would like to help her out, let us
know at infogal at cwluherstory.org and we'll pass your name along. She
has a special request: If you visited the Ms. Lounge bar, or played
with the Ms. Lounge team she would very much like to hear your
recollections.
Ann uses the CWLU Herstory website in her classes at the University
of Wisconsin and we are very excited to be working with her.

THE CHICAGO WOMEN'S HEALTH CENTER HAS AN ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
The Chicago Women's Health Center was founded in 1975 and has roots
in the CWLU's health projects of the time. Women's Studies professor
Rosalind Hinton and student Carianne Smogar of DePaul University are
now working on an oral history of the Center. The CWLU Herstory
Project is supporting their efforts by sharing resources and
documents.

THE CHICAGO WOMEN'S HEALTH HISTORY GROUP CONTINUES ITS WORK
Herstory Project's Health History Committee has decided to assemble
an in-depth memoir of Chicago women's health activist Jenny Knauss.
Kathy Mallin and Coral Norris are taping interviews with Jenny. Bob
Simpson has offered to convert the audio tapes to digital format and
help edit them. After editing is completed, the Committee will
convert the taped interviews into a transcript. From there, they can
be turned into a memoir that could be published on paper and on the
web. Estelle Carol, Mardge Cohen, Amy Laiken and Laurie Crawford are
also working on the project.
Jenny Knauss was recently featured on a WGN-TV news story about
medical students pairing with Alzheimer's patients for the benefit of
both. This very special program is sponsored by Northwestern
University. You may view a web version of the news story at
http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUMemoir/jennyvid.html .

THE HERSTORY PROJECT IS APPLYING TO GIVE A PRESENTATION AT A 2004
WOMEN'S STUDIES CONFERENCE
The Herstory Project hopes to do a roundtable presentation at a
conference on June 10-12, 2004 at Loyola University. The Conference
theme is "Centering Gender History". The sponsor is Women's and
Gender Historians of the Midwest. Proposals are due Sept 1, 2003.
Plans are still very tentative, but we hope to be able to share some
of the CWLU history as well as website teaching resources. We also
plan to further develop a PowerPoint presentation on the CWLU
originally done by Peg Strobel. Contact the CWLU Herstory Project at
infogal at cwluherstory.org if you have suggestions.

SECOND CALL! HELP IDENTIFY JO FREEMEN'S PHOTOS
Longtime feminist writer Jo Freeman has posted 4 sets of photos she
took of events circa 1969-1970. She is asking E-Zine readers to look
at the photos and provide information on the events, including exact
dates and identifications of participants and organizers. Reports
from actual participants are especially welcome. She would like to
write historical essays about all three and any personal
recollections, press clippings, leaflets etc. would be very helpful.
The FOUR photo sets are:
1- The Chicago ERA march (Date?)
http://www.uic.edu/orgs/cwluherstory/jofreeman/futurephotos/ChiERA/
There are photos of several people and a nice picture of former
CWLUer Heather Booth holding her baby . A CWLU banner is clearly
visible in several photos and one participant is proudly displaying a
Graphics Collective poster. Can you identify the other people in
these photos? When was the march held? Who organized it?
2- The protest at the American Medical Association: Who? What? When?
Why?
http://www.uic.edu/orgs/cwluherstory/jofreeman/futurephotos/AMAweb/
3- WITCH (Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell)
at the University of Chicago: What was being hexed at UC?
http://www.uic.edu/orgs/cwluherstory/jofreeman/futurephotos/WITCHweb/
(Date?) Former CWLUer Coral Norris may be seen peeking through her
WITCH makeup at a WITCH hex. Do you recognize anyone else in these
photos?
4- Protest at the Health, Education and Welfare Department in Washington D.C.
http://www.uic.edu/orgs/cwluherstory/jofreeman/futurephotos/HEWweb/index.htm
You may contact Jo directly at jfrbc at hotmail.com if you have info to
share with her.
Please visit her main web site at http://www.jofreeman.com. Jo is a
prolific and original writer and is constantly adding new material.
If you were involved in any of these events whose photos appear on
her web site, you are invited to write your personal recollections
and submit them for possible posting.

CWLU HERSTORY PROJECT GETS SOME PUBLICITY AT THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S
STUDIES ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) held its annual
conference last June in New Orleans. The Herstory Project produced a
publicity flier especially for the conference. Special thanks to
Colette Morrow of Purdue and Rosalind Hinton of DePaul who agreed to
take fliers to New Orleans and circulate them at the conference.

DIAL PRESS TO PUBLISH LETTERS ARCHIVED ON THE HERSTORY SITE
In the November 1971 issue of Womankind (the CWLU newspaper), Elaine
Wessel published a letter about loving women. In the January 1972
issue, Elaine's mom answered her. You may read the letters online at
http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/motherdaughter.html.
Last month Dial Press contacted us to request permission to print
these letters in a book that collects American women's letters from
1776 to the present. We forwarded the permission request to Elaine.
Dial also asked us for permission to publish a 1968 letter about
Black activism and reproductive rights from Patricia Robinson. We
obtained her letter from a pamphlet in our archives, so we were
unable to help them with permissions. We have gotten several queries
from people looking for Patricia Robinson. If anyone has information
about her, please pass it on to us. You may read Patricia Robinson's
letter at http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/blackwomen.html .

SINGER KRISTIN LEMS IS PUTTING TOGETHER A WOMEN'S HISTORY MULTIMEDIA SHOW
Many of you may know the feminist music of Kristin Lems, but you may
not know that Kristin is also an associate professor at
National-Louis University, teaching in the Department of Applied
Language. National-Louis gave Kristin a sabbatical for fall quarter
2003 to put together a women's history PowerPoint show using spoken
word, video clips, slides, along with songs and places for audience
participation.
We wish Kristin the best of luck in her effort and we will share any
of our resources that may help her.

BITCH MAGAZINE NEEDS YOUR HELP
"Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture" is an intelligent
provocative publication with wit and style. It also needs your help.
Facing the same grinding financial pressure that any independent
publication faces, Bitch needs 3000 new subscribers to stay afloat.
If you are not familiar with Bitch, visit your local feminist or
independent bookstore to pick up a copy. Then log on to
http://www.bitchmagazine.com and become a subscriber. You can also
order Bitchgear like T-shirts and other apparel while you are signing
up for a subscription.
Special thanks to Paula Kamen for bringing this to our attention.

SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE?
We added "Notes on a Writer's Workshop" to the Consciousness section
of the site. This article from the December 1971 Black Maria literary
magazine describes a women writers workshop sponsored by Liberation
School. We also added "Why Women's Liberation?", a clear succinct
explanation from the same issue of Black Maria. Black Maria was
closely associated with the CWLU.
Please visit http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/conscious.html.
The 1975 Socialist Feminist Conference held in Yellow Springs OH
brought together 1500 women to discuss issues of women's liberation.
You may read a CWLU report on the conference at
http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUArchive/socfem1975.html .
We posted a chapter from Jo Freeman's upcoming book, "At Berkeley in
the 60's" in the Memoirs section. Jo's new book tells the story of
her coming of age as a political activist during the Free Speech
Movement at UC Berkeley. The chapter we posted tells how she
hitchhiked across America to support the Mississippi Freedom
Democratic Party at the 1964 Democratic Convention.
We updated our Feminist Salon at http://www.cwluherstory.com/phpweb/
with several new articles including:
- an appeal from Bitch magazine for subscribers
- a review of the new book, "Women in Viet Nam: An Oral History"
- a review of the new film "Lilya-4-Ever", a powerful indictment of
international sex trafficking
- an article about combatting domestic violence in Ecuador
- an announcement of a 2004 pro-choice March on Washington
- an article comparing the lives of Rachel Corrie and Jessica Lynch
- an article on women in the Vienna Philharmonic
- an article on why the Scandinavian social democracies are the best
places to be a mom
- an article on the harassment of gay college students
Our Feminist Salon spotlights modern feminism. We urge you to
contribute news, essays, poems, reviews, editorials and fiction that
you have written. It's a great place to preview work-in-progress.
We're open to just about anything feminist related. We get a modest,
but steady stream of visitors.

BOOK!
"Tidal Wave" by Sara Evans is a well written history of the Second
Wave women's liberation movement. It has the best analysis of
socialist feminism we've seen yet. Sara Evans also understands that
the Midwest grows feminists as well as cornfields and avoids the
bi-coastal bias we've seen in some other second-wave feminist
histories.

The Herstory Project is always looking for interns. We have lots of
project ideas to suggest or you may propose your own. We are
sponsored by the UIC Center for Research on Women and Gender and our
principle academic contact is Peg Strobel. You'll have to arrange
credit with your school, but we'll be happy to facilitate that in
whatever ways we are able.
