GRAPHICS COLLECTIVE POSTER UPDATE

The Herstory Project is working on the digital scans of the posters
and setting up our online ordering. The project is moving more slowly
than we would like due to our limited time and resources. Thanks for
your patience.

The Chicago Women's Graphics Collective began as a workgroup of the
Chicago Women's Liberation Union and distributed tens of thousands of
feminist posters worldwide until it disbanded in the early 1980's

PLANNING FOR MIDWEST VETERAN FEMINISTS OF AMERICA CONTINUES

A number of women met at the UIC Center for Research on Women and
Gender on October 28 to continue planning for a 2004 Veteran
Feminists of America (VFA) event in the Midwest. As many of you know,
Veteran Feminists of America (VFA) is a nonprofit organization for
veterans of the Second Wave of the feminist movement. A number of
ideas were discussed including the possibility of a conference in
August of 2004. Contact Alice Dan at alicedan at uic.edu if you want to
help.

NEO-NAZI SITE LINKS TO CWLU HERSTORY WEBSITE

A Neo-Nazi white supremacist website which describes feminism as an
"ideology of Jewish hate" has linked to the CWLU Herstory site. In a
long rambling online article which denounces Ann Koedt's article,
'The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm", the Neo-Nazi site mixes racism,
sexism and homophobia and chose the CWLU Herstory site as their
example of "Jewish hate".

JEWISH WOMEN'S ONLINE ARCHIVE REDESIGNED WITH NEW EXCITING FEATURES

On a more positive note, the Jewish Women's Archive(JWA) has
redesigned its pioneering website, http://www.jwa.org. Now JWA's rich

easier to use for teachers, students, researchers and all interested
individuals.

There are special online exhibits to mark the 350th anniversary of
Jewish communal life in North America including primary source

LEAD A "THAT TAKES OVARIES" PLAY OR OPEN MIC

THAT TAKES OVARIES!: Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts is a book, an
open mic movement, and now a play, too, all for women's empowerment:
Real-life stories about gutsy, outrageous, courageous things women
and girls have done; multi-cultural, playful, true tales of
estrogen-powered deeds.

Because women everywhere have inspiring stories to boast about, *any*
woman *anywhere* can lead a That Takes Ovaries! open mic on campus or
in the community (70 held to date). There, gals share stories about
times they acted boldly, guys brag about their mothers, sisters,
daughters. All speakers get a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil -- a
Golden Ovary Award -- for their courage. Events held for fun or as
fundraiser for your favorite grrrlz cause. First time organizers
welcome! For open mike guidelines, or the play/script (adapted from
the book), contact rivka at ThatTakesOvaries.org or visit
http://www.ThatTakesOvaries.org.

BOOK!

Do I Want to be a Mom? by Diana Dell and Suzan Erem

Women have never really had permission to ask this question out loud
in a practical, lifestyle kind of way, even with the great gains made
by second wave feminism. So now it's made the mainstream, 30 years
later, with questions and comments by real women who have been moms
and who have chosen not to be moms - the good, the bad and the ugly
about life with kids and life without kids. Co-author Suzan Erem is a
former Chicago union organizer who has worked with the CWLU Herstory
Project.

SHOWING OF THE CLASSIC LABOR FILM "SALT OF THE EARTH"

Recently released on DVD, this film was made during the height of the
McCarthy era by a group of blacklisted filmmakers who were among the
best and the brightest Hollywood talent of the day. It is a powerful
and emotionally charged feature length film.

Based on a 1950 strike by zinc miners and their families in Silver
City, New Mexico, Salt of the Earth was selected by the Library of
Congress as one of only 100 American films to be preserved for
posterity. It portrays a moving and controversial portrait of human
courage, community solidarity and progressive union politics. The
women took bold leadership roles during the strike.

Prior to the special showing of Salt of the Earth, Lorrenzo Torres
one of the participant-actors in the film will briefly address the
audience on the film's story and controversial making.
