However, visitors to the site must download a form and mail it in with their payment. We now have an online shopping cart with credit card ordering , but we need you to look it over and test it before it goes "public". Please visit http://www.cwluherstory.org/CWLUMarket/ccp51/ and then tell us what you think. You may use the "Contact Us" web form on the site or e-mail infogal@cwluherstory.org. Please alert us to any typos or factual errors you find. Let us know if you find anything confusing or if something does not work as you expect. As an incentive, we are offering a 10% discount on any shopping cart orders from now until February 15 as a way to help us test the online catalog before it goes public. The Chicago Women's Graphics Collective began as a workgroup of the Chicago Women's Liberation Union and distributed tens of thousands of feminist posters worldwide until it disbanded in the early 1980's **************************** CWLU HERSTORY PROJECT MEMBERSHIP DRIVE CONTINUES The Herstory Project is continuing its membership drive complete with premiums like poster reproductions, refrigerator magnets, T-shirts, and Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band CD's. Membership forms are available at http://www.cwluherstory.org/join.html in Adobe Acrobat form. Details about membership levels and premiums are on the form. Thanks to everyone for your financial support! *************************** BITCH MAGAZINE RUNS AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN MOVING DAY ALBUM In 1972, the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band and its sister band, the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band, cut a classic album called Mountain Moving Day. Inexplicably, the article fails to mention that the music of both bands is available on the Herstory site along with articles and photos. Anyway, if you actually want to hear these bands as well as read about them, visit http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUGallery/rock.html. You may listen using the Quicktime browser plug-in or download MP3's of all the songs on the album. *************************** WOMEN'S MONTH IS COMING TO UIC Every year the University of Illinois at Chicago puts on a month-long series of women's events. Only last Saturday, Ruth attended the Midwest Conference of the Veteran Feminists of America to meet her old friends and colleagues and plan how to continue the fight for gender equality. Ruth was one of the organizers of the Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation. Better known as "Jane", it was an underground abortion network in Chicago that performed over 11,000 abortions in the days before Roe vs. Wade. Jane was a workgroup of the Chicago Women's Liberation Union which was one of the major feminist groups in Chicago in the 1970's. The story of this remarkable organization has been told in a book, a documentary film and a stage play. You may find more information about Jane at http://www.cwluherstory.com/CWLUFeature/feature.html. Ruth was more than a courageous organizer and fighter for women's rights. She was also a good friend and mentor to many people in Chicago. In recent years she taught ceramics at the Lille Street Studio and ran a boarding house for students at the University of Chicago. Ruth was also an active member of the CWLU Herstory Project (www.cwluherstory.org), which is documenting the history of the women's liberation movement in Chicago. Despite her many family and personal responsibilities, Ruth always seemed to find the time to talk to young students about her experiences in the women's liberation movement. Those of us who knew Ruth mourn her passing and are determined to carry on the legacy that she has left to us. Good bye Ruth, you touched so many lives in such a positive way. Services for Ruth Surgal will be held-- Sunday, Sept 5, 2004, 10:30 am KAM Israel Isaiah Synagogue 5039 S. The other batch of photos was taken at the 1976 Socialist Feminist conference held in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Over a thousand women attended the conference. The CWLU was one of the principle organizers. We also updated our women's liberation timeline with information provided by the Herstory women's health group.
