HERSTORY HEALTH PROJECT DELIVERS PRESENTATION AT MIDWEST CONFERENCE
OF WOMEN AND GENDER HISTORIANS

Herstory Health Project members Mardge Cohen, Kathy Mallin, Coral
Norris and Estelle Carol presented a history of the CWLU's health
activism in Chicago on June 12th at Loyola University.

Using PowerPoint to show historic photos and leaflets, the 4 women
were able to uncover a lot of previously hidden history in 40
minutes. Attendance was small, but Health project members hope to use
the experience to edit the PowerPoint show so it can be available for
groups and classes.

HERSTORY BROCHURES DISTRIBUTED AT NATIONAL WOMEN'S STUDIES
ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

Although the CWLU Herstory Project could not afford a literature
table at the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) Conference
in Milwaukee, Colette Morrow, the outgoing president of the NWSA
stepped up to the plate and saw that our literature was distributed
to the conference attendees.

We know a number of teachers use our site to educate their students
about the women's liberation movement and we'd like to give special
thanks to Colette for her efforts on our behalf.

RESEARCHER SEEKING HELP WITH ORAL HISTORY PROJECT IN CHICAGO

Marie McDonald is working on an oral history project that focuses on
the lives of musicians, specifically on the lives of women in music.
Her research cuts across all genres and there are no specifics as to
how one is involved in music, i.e. singer, musician, songwriter,
etc...she would love to hear from women involved in music here in
Chicago who might be willing to participate in this research.

She also needs access to digital video and audio equipment while
visiting Chicago. She is a producer at a PEG television station in
Massachusetts (www.aotv13.org), so she know hows to use the
equipment. . When she called the local PEG station here, The
Executive Director's comment was "With 600 other producers we can't
help you!" If you can help her get access to digital video
equipment, she would be grateful

Her website is at http://www.mimsmusic.org and you may e-mail her at
mimacdonald at myrealbox.com .

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY OPENS AN SEIU DISTRICT 925 ARCHIVE COLLECTION

The Walter P. Reuther Library of the College of Urban, Labor &
Metropolitan Affairs has announced the opening of the Service
Employees International Union (SEIU) District 925 Collection.
Comprising 15 linear feet and spanning the years 1973 to 2004, this
collection is an invaluable resource for historians and other
scholars seeking to understand the interplay between the women's
movement and the labor movement in the last quarter of the twentieth
century.

District 925 successfully organized thousands of librarians, college
and university support staff, day care, local government workers and
other office, technical and professional employees. This organizing
took place in hard-fought campaigns primarily in Massachusetts, Ohio
and Washington. Along with 9 to 5,the National Association of Working
Women, it lobbied for equal pay, affirmative action, child care,
office health and safety and against age discrimination and sexual
harassment.

District 925 merged with other SEIU locals in 2001 and lost its
independent identity.

"We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert
Frost's familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have
long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on
which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster." -
Rachel Carson
