40 original posters assembled by the Chicago
Women's Liberation Union Herstory Project.

RECEPTION - Friday, November 5, 6-9 pm. Show

the offices and homes of feminists across North
America. They were printed by hand and sold for a
few dollars by the tens of thousands during the
rise of the Women's Liberation Movement in the
70s and 80s.

HERSTORY PROJECT PARTICIPATES IN "OUTSPOKEN - CHICAGO'S FREE SPEECH TRADITION"

From October 1 to January 15, Chicagoans will be
celebrating our city's rich free speech tradition
with an exhibit at the Newberry Library and a
series of public events. Sponsored by the
Newberry Library and the Chicago Historical
Society, the exhibit features leaflets, posters,
letters, photos, news clippings, cartoons,
recordings, newpapers and other records of how
Chicagoans have spoken out for justice in the
face of opposition.

Among the exhibits is a CWLU poster advocating
economic justice for women, a photo of the
Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band and the
original 33 1/3 vinyl LP recording of Mountain
Moving Day. Mountain Moving Day featured both the
Chicago and New Haven Women's Liberation Rock
Bands.

Please visit http://www.newberry.org/ for

SO WHAT'S NEW ON THE HERSTORY SITE?

We added historic photos by Kathy Mallin to our CWLU Herstory Gallery.

One batch of photos captures the excitement of
the 1975 Peoples' Health Fair held in Chicago's
Lakeview neighborhood . Sponsored by Rising Up
Angry, a Northside radical community group, the
Fair featured many exhibits, including a women's
health tent sponsored by the Chicago Women's
Liberation Union.

The other batch of photos was taken at the 1976
Socialist Feminist conference held in Yellow
Springs, Ohio. Over a thousand women attended the
conference. The CWLU was one of the principle
organizers.

We also updated our women's liberation timeline
with information provided by the Herstory women's
health group. Special thanks to Coral Norris for
compiling their research into a handy Excel
spreadsheet.

Women's Empowerment Retreat comes to Chicago--
November 12-14

Founded in 1997 by Naomi Wolf and Margot Magowan,
the Woodhull Institute's guiding principle is
that power and idealism don't have to be mutually
exclusive.

Over 500 women have attended Woodhull Institute
retreats and learned advocacy and negotiation,
financial strategies, public speaking, and
ethical leadership. The Institute invites you to
join them in Chicago to discover what these women
have learned themselves: that you have the power
to change the world, and that Woodhull's
community of influential women will support you
as you do.

"We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike
the roads in Robert Frost's familiar poem, they
are not equally fair. The road we have long been
traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth
superhighway on which we progress with great
speed, but at its end lies disaster." - Rachel
