This work included Jane, which provided abortions to women before legalization and the struggle to save the Chicago Maternity Center and the low cost, home births it provided. Recently, Jenny Knauss, Estelle Carol, Mardge Cohen, Lauren Crawford, Diane Horowitz, Kathy Mallin and Coral Norris -- all former members of the CWLU, assembled an impressive collection of photos, leaflets, graphics and other documents from the Chicago women's health movement. The women took a selection of this material and wrote a PowerPoint presentation of this history entitled: "The Roots, History, and Legacy of the Women's Health Movement within the Chicago Women's Liberation Union (CWLU)" Don't miss this opportunity to experience some inspiring Chicago feminist history. When the bookstore closed at 9 pm, a number of people adjourned to a local coffee job for a reunion of former "Janes" accompanied by friends and supporters. If you missed the November reading, Judith will be back in town March 2006 during UIC's Women's History Month activities. We'll keep you posted. **************************** POOL YOUR RESOURCES TO SUPPORT HIV+ WOMEN IN RWANDA Eleven years after the genocide in Rwanda, many of the women who were raped during the conflict, are now seriously ill with AIDS. On December 4, 2005 Frank Mugisha, Naila Munginyinka, Felicite Rwemalika from Rwanda joined Chicago's own Dr. Mardge Cohen for an evening fundraiser to collect money for WE-ACTx (Women's Equity In Access To Care and Treatment). Former CWLU health activist Mardge Cohen has been working in Rwanda with women who are living with HIV and AIDS. Held on Chicago's Northside at the home of union leader Roberta Lynch, the fundraiser helped to support the vital work of WE-ACTx. Mary M. Robinson was there selling her hand-knit scarves to support WE-ACTx Rwanda's projects. Special thanks to Diane Horwitz for her organizing efforts. WE-ACTx began working in Rwanda in early 2004 to provide accelerated HIV care and access to antiretroviral medicine to genocide rape survivors very ill with AIDS, in active partnership with the Rwandan government and five initial non-governmental organizations (NGOs) serving genocide and rape survivors, widows and orphans. An overflowing cross-generational crowd attended the slide show presentation by the Coral Norris and Mardge Cohen at Women and Children First Bookstore on January 10, 2006. The show covered the founding of women health clinics, Jane the abortion service, the struggle for reproductive rights, sterilization abuse, and the movement's legacy. Many of the original participants attended. The younger members of the audience expressed great enthusiasm about learning about this history and, more importantly, what we should be doing now to continue the battle for women's health and reproductive rights. The PowerPoint slide show is a project of CWLU Herstory Project and will be available on CD. *************************** SOUTH DAKOTA ABORTION BAN BRINGS RENEWED INTEREST IN THE CWLU AND JANE Soon after the South Dakota abortion ban was signed, a blogger who calls herself "Molly Saves the Day" published a long blog entry that detailed how to perform a D&C as well as information about the history of Jane, the Abortion Counseling Service. You may read it at http://mollysavestheday.blogspot.com/2006/02/for-women-of-south-dakota-abortion.html Her blog entry attracted news media attention and it wasn't long before the Herstory Project began receiving media inquiries. With help from some media savvy former CWLUers (special thanks to Jean, Judith and Heather), we were able to weather the brief media storm and get on with our work. A Newhouse News Reporter named Dru Sefton wrote a pretty decent article based on all of this and used a photo of the CWLU headquarters along with a quote from former "Jane" Laura Kaplan. We found dealing with Dru Sefton to be a refreshing experience. She's a well informed journalist who respects her sources and has the old fashioned bulldog-like tenaciousness one wishes all newspeople had. You can read her story at http://www.newhousenews.com/archive/sefton031406.html *************************** JENNIFER ABOD PREVIEWS "LOOK US IN THE EYE" AT THE SAN DIEGO HISTORY MUSEUM Jennifer Abod's new film "Look Us in the Eye: The Old Women's Project" was SRO at the San Diego History Museum on March 12th. Thanks to the generous spirit of her many friends and supporters, she received thousands of dollars of donations which went to pay for attendant care and other medical expenses. Dozens of people volunteered to sit with her while she was still too confused to be left alone. They cleaned, cooked, shopped, handled her bills, made calls for her, and drove her to appointments. Such a powerful community response has certainly sped her healing. Aurora, her family and friends are deeply grateful to all those who helped create this "village" of support. There was a community benefit held for Aurora last August in Berkeley CA featuring poetry, music and great food. She is now writing again. Aurora is currently working on Silt, which weaves together the history, ecology and cultures of the Mississippi River and the Caribbean. Her book is a call to face the consequences of our actions for all life on the planet, while invoking the deep connection between our stories, which is our greatest resource for inventing new ways to live on earth. She is also writing a historical mystery set in Puerto Rico in 1897. Aurora is a former member of the CWLU as was her mother Rosario. *************************** JENNIFER ABOD'S NEW FILM ABOUT AGEISM - "LOOK US IN THE EYE" IS NOW AVAILABLE AND IS COMING TO CHICAGO In this new video from Jennifer Abod, Cynthia Rich, Mannie Garza and Janice Keaffaber discuss ageism and activism. They take the stereotypes of an ageist culture and turn them on their heads. Wearing brilliant t-shirts that declare "Old Women Are Your Future" and carrying their giant multi-ethnic old woman puppet, POWER (Pissed Old Woman Engaged In Revolution), The Old Women's Project refuses invisibility and proclaims that old women are part of every social justice issue. The film will be screening at the Lesbian and Gay Festival in November in Chicago. If you are in San Diego you can see the film on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 8, as part of the 4th San Diego Women's Film Festival in Balboa Park. The Herstory Project has been helping her by providing photos, graphics and feminist contacts. Jennifer is asking for your help. She needs pictures of you, any feminist, peace, civil rights marches and other feminists from 1965 to the late 1970's---- Also, photos of any meetings and gatherings involving the women's liberation movement or civil rights movement. She is compiling the list of archival footage and photographs that are in the rough edit of the film and costs are mounting. The Schlesinger Library and the Sophia Smith Collection have great photos - all at a substantial cost. If she can get people to donate their own photographs and movie footage to the film that will speed up production. She would deeply appreciate the use of these images. Of course, you would be acknowledged in the credits for this kindness. The photos and footage must either be shot by you or owned by someone she can get clearances from. And, the photos can be scanned and emailed or sent to her on a CD. The resolution needs to be 600 to 900 dpi. (This resolution is very detailed and enables the image to "hold up" in a movie theater.) Any actual photographs can be sent to her via Federal Express (she will offer her Fed Ex number) and they will be sent back to you via Federal Express. The class nature and the racism of this process is hidden in the language of "mixed income communities" and "regeneration" -- or in Chicago's case "renaissance" and "transformation". Chicago is a city that spent $1/2 billion for Millennium Park; regularly gives tax breaks to and funds massive infrastructure improvements for developers; tore down 19,000 units of public housing to open up space for development, displacing whole working class communities for condos; and a city that polices those who transgress the city image. Chicago is a city whose officials raise fares on public transportation, fail to educate students and then use that failure as a reason to privatize schools, and that criminalizes whole sectors of African American communities. Area/Chicago dissects the new urban mythology promulgated by the Daley Administration in great and exacting detail. You may read its highly provocative and analytical articles at http://www.areachicago.com/. One of the prime movers of Area/Chicago is Dr. Pauline Lipman, an education professor at DePaul University. Pauline is a former CWLUer. **************************** ELLEN DUBOIS ATTACKED BY RIGHTWING UCLA "BRUIN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION" History professor Ellen DuBois, a former CWLUer, came under fire from Andrew Jones, a 2003 UCLA graduate who once worked as a research assistant to David Horowitz, the right-wing commentator. Horowitz has since disavowed his former prodigy. Jones is the prime mover behind the Bruin Alumni Association which published a website attacking Ellen and 29 other UCLA profs. The Bruin Alumni Association lost several prominent members after Jones paid students to spy on professors he considered "radical." Jones named Ellen DuBois to his "Dirty Thirty" list that included detailed personal information about some of the targeted professors. The Bruin Alumni Association campaign coincided with attempts in the California legislature to limit academic freedom. We support Ellen and the 29 other targeted professors in their struggle to keep UCLA classrooms open to free discussion and debate. We plan to seriously upgrade the online presentation of these posters when our new website is finally online. **************************** CALL FOR PAPERS: SISTERSONG - LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX! The SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective would like to invite you to apply to participate as a plenary speaker or workshop leader for their 10th anniversary national conference on women of color and reproductive justice called Let's Talk About Sex! The conference will be held May 31- June 2, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois hosted by African American Women Evolving and more than 1,200 people are expected to attend. Since the right to have sex is a topic rarely discussed when addressing reproductive health and rights issues, SisterSong believes that sexual prohibitions are not only promoted by moral conservatives in this country, but also by reproductive rights advocates who fail to promote a sex-positive culture. Sex is not just for pro-creation and sexual pleasure - it is a human right. They would like to create a pro-sex space for the pro-choice movement and they hope you will join them. SisterSong is also soliciting organizational co-sponsors and individual donors for this important conference. If your organization is interested in becoming a major co-sponsor with special benefits and opportunities, please contact them at documentation@sistersong.net. If you are interested in joining SisterSong's electronic listserv for future announcements, please send an email to listserv@sistersong.net.
