Thanks for this link. I was previously a bit put off by its length but I
can probably get it into comfortably readable form without killing too
many trees :-)

I have a copy of this. Also "Splitting the Second: The Story of Atomic
Timekeeping" by Tony Jones (IoP publising) is a nice accessible overview.
