An event implies a measurable quantity - a simple or complex data structure
representing one or more empirically determined parameters.  That is, the
report of an event conveys dependent variable(s) expressed on a grid of
independent variable(s), typically time.

 

I'm not defending the wording, but surely they are using the term "event" as
it is sometimes used in computer science, i.e., notification of something of
interest that could be acted upon.  This may be sloppy usage, but it is
commonplace.
