Actually, if you do read the rationale and also the information I've got
during private discussions it has become clear that it was the only
solution they could agree on but not without much discussion and several
proposals of improvement. There is room for improvements, but the
current debate is mainly to make clear what is actually there and what
is not there. It is not quite what you would expect.
Surely, this is not the only shortcoming of POSIX and the members of the
committee seems pretty aware of this. I guess this is why they keep
working on various improvements.
