So should they adjust all of them retroactively, editing all of 
history to make the times of events (e.g., the times the planes hit 
the buildings on Sept. 11, 2001) accurate in accordance with the new 
standard they determine around the year 4000 ought to have been 
adopted millennia earlier?

This brings to my mind the announcement in the January 1, 2000 issue 
of the New York Times that they had muffed up the issue number count 
on the front page starting some time in the 1800s, so that the issue 
numbers for the entire 20th century were incorrect; they responded by 
fixing the number starting on 1/1/2000.  Should they have reprinted 
the past century-plus of papers to reflect the correct numbering?
