IMO, we lose focus when we worry about what will happen in 100 or 1000 years.   Our focus is remediating current issues and avoiding confusion now and in the near future.   To me, it seems ridiculous to justify changes because it would take hundreds of years for many to notice any effect.  This group includes many who would be seriously affected soon or even now.
