Writing complete pages

Hi there,

this is my first posting on this list -- so please don't hurt me, if
this topic was discussed already ;-)

I just downloaded Markdown last night and played around with it a
little bit. I am absolutely thrilled -- a great tool!

So I decided to write the documentation (complete html pages) for a new
piece of software with it. Unfortunately I ran into two smaller
problems:

Markdown puts before the "<html>" a "<p>" and after the "</html>" a
"</p>". Also it puts an "</p>" after "<body>".

That leads me to the seconds problem: The meta-tag "<meta
http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />" will
ignored because the "<p>" tag at the top of the page. Therefore all of
my German Umlauts are displayed wrong.

Has anybody a solution for that?

Thanks in advance!
Frank
