Err, why? Just use two superscript digits where you have more than 9
footnotes...

Ideally I'd also like the Markdown footnote syntax to extend to be
able to use non-digits as the footnote reference. Like * (ASTERISK,
002A), † (DAGGER, 2020), ‡ (DOUBLE DAGGER, 2021), maybe even ⁂
(ASTERISM, 2042).
