I have to say that I think Markdown may eventually be used for things
besides HTML and plain text.
A while back, I came across a website that described the inner-workings
of the RTF format. It's not all that complicated. I bet a programmer
(not me, for example) could take markdown.pl or any of the other
versions of markdown and hack it to produce rtf documents in, say, an
hour.
Personally I think that would be valuable. And if it could do PDF,
that'd be great. Heck, with Apple's new iWork, maybe someone will make
Markdown create Pages archives. Users could focus on editing on the
road (say via a shell account or actually on the web) and when they get
home they could finish up in Pages for printouts. And run it through
markdown.pl for posting on the web.
