It's worth remembering that _this_ in Markdown doesn't italicise text, it places it within HTML emphasis tags. The traditional default display for emphasis may be italics, but <em> doesn't = italics. <i> does.

My copy of Bringhurst is in storage, but this was true even before
hyperlinks were invented. So just as something underlined when
handwritten would be typeset as italics, something underlined in
Markdown will be HTMLized into italics.
