Bored with XML markup for simpler tasks, I've been using plain text markup
for a while. Recently I've come across a variant.
Now documented at 
http://www.dpawson.co.uk/java/noteparser.html

Uses java, sax2 and an XSLT engine (Saxon from Saxonica.com) to produce
XML from plain text.

I'm half way to an external text file definition of the syntax.
