Good question, perhaps parenthesis should be balanced in URLs. But it  
should at least work when the URL is enclosed within angle brakets:

     [WIMP](<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIMP_(computing)>)

This one I'm sure it's a bug. It returns the same output as your  
example above:

     <p><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WIMP_(computing">WIMP</ 
a>>)</p>
