An examination of the threads in these[1] articles will quickly reveal that many are quite happily (and preferably) using variable-width fonts for programming. I, for one, have found Verdana to be an excellent choice; it has lots of space around the characters that need it, and similar characters which are easily confused in many fonts are clearly distinguished. Of course, much depends upon the quality of rendering.
