[MCR] Rockfall Incident Mt. Fay

Public Mountain Conditions Report mcr at informalex.org

A party of two were climbing the Roth - Kallen route on the north face of
Mt. Fay yesterday when a fairly large rockfall hit one of the party about
one pitch from the top. This happened at around 11:30 AM. They managed to
top out and get back down the west ridge to the Neil Colgan hut, but one of
the party had suffered a large gash to his leg (and also a fracture of the
fibula.) Guides Mike Treaherne and James Blench had a radio at the hut and
assisted with the getting the patient evacuated at first light.

The melt has been significant on the big faces over the last week or so,
and even an early start may not necessarily guarantee that rocks will not
be melting out if there is melting snow on ice above you. (See photos)
