Spent a couple of weeks in Jasper during the first half of July. Here are
some thoughts on things I noticed:
Mount Edith Cavell - still a LOT of snow and a few weeks behind in drying
off. If you want to climb it this summer wait until August if you can.
Fryatt Valley - all of the peaks in this area had not yet dried off and
Christie / Brussels / Lowell / Fryatt / Xerxes / Parnassus all looked very
snowy. A couple of weeks behind in drying off.
Peveril Peak - still had snow on it but should be getting close to drying
off soon.
Old Man Mountain / Roche Bonhomme - was dry all the way to the summit when
we ascended. No ice axe necessary.
Pyramid mountain - still had a bunch of snow on it a week ago - best to get
an updated report from more recent observations.
Tonquin Valley from a distance - east faces looked to still have a lot more
snow than I would normally have expected.
Charlton / Unwin and Maligne group from a distance - still looked a couple
of weeks behind normal.
Colin Range - still some remnants of snow on the more southerly peaks but
otherwise the peaks were drying off nicely. You may encounter snow on the N
side of Meisner's Ridge with perhaps some snow encountered on the decent as
well.
Esplanade / Gargoyle / Roche de Smet / Roche Ronde / Roche Boule - all of
the south aspects of these peaks are now in dry summer conditions.
Roche Jacques / Roche Miette / Roche a Perdrix / Hidden Valley - all
primarily dry and have all seen ascents.
Bedson Ridge / Ashlar Ridge - rock climbs are all dry and have seen ascents.
Ogre Canyon - rock routes all dry for some time now but the road was
reported in rough shape after a lot of wet weather (2nd hand report). I
would still recommend a 4x4 if you are going in via Brule.
Have Fun
