[MCR] Gimli Peak & Mulvey Basin, Selkirk Mountains

Hi all,

We spent the last 3 days in Mulvey basin near Gimli peak. Like everywhere else, the extended Spring is being felt down here and conditions are 3 to 4 weeks behind. The basin is mostly snow covered and the lakes still frozen. Last week's cold front brought up to 15cm of new snow in the higher 
alpine, most of which is melted by now. There are still some remaining snow 
patches on higher north facing terrain. Traveling on snow was generally excellent even without an overnight 
freeze. Our descent into Mulvey Basin from the Gimli col was done comfortably without
 crampons, an ice axe was very useful. Glide cracks are starting to open below the Gimli col and the regular decent route west of the col, towards Midgard peak, is recommended (see photo). 

The south ridge of Gimli peak is looking dry and in good shape, it is starting to see more and more traffic. There is still plenty of snow on the regular East face descent route and an ice axe would be useful. North facing rock routes in the area were too wet to climb last week-end, however a lot of the south
 facing routes were either dry or had a chance to dry out yesterday. Things should improve 
quickly later this week if the forecast sunny weather materialize.  


The camping area below the south ridge of Gimli is snow free, there is lots of snow available nearby for drinking water. Also, the access road is in decent shape. 4 wheel drive is recommended but not mandatory.
