[MCR] 1 of 3 msgs Downed avalanches along Highway 93 N

[Public Mountain Conditions Report]

Hello everyone, 

I did an avalanche patrol up the Banff Jasper Parkway today from Lake Louise and observed several downed avalanches that likely occurred 2 days ago.   The avalanches on Crowfoot and Bow Peak were up to 1.5 m deep, failing on an old snow surface, involving windloaded shallow gullies or unsupported slopes above cliffs.  The Thompson peak above Bow Lake avalanches were smaller, on unsupported features or convex roll, and also slid on an old snow surface.  Hector sub peak slides were typical of what we are seeing on S-SW aspects, which are thin slabs 20-60 cm thick. 

Although there were no new avalanches reported today, these layers are likely still sensitive to human triggering, see today's Parks Canada Avalanche Bulletin for more details.
