Best of the Season to all,
Here are a few observations from this morning's ski tour in the "Fingers" of
Mt. MacPherson.
Weather today was a thin overcast with no precipitation and cool temps (-2
in the valley).
Travel conditions have improved tremendously from last week's wait deep
trail breaking with ski penetration in the 20-25cms range. Lots of tracks in
the fingers from the last few days as usual but we still managed to find a
fresh line and there are others around for sure.
Avalanche activity was limited to small sluffs out of the steep rock bands
which looked like they were triggered by tree bombs within the last 48hours.
The most significant observation was the presence of surface hoar(those
feathery snow crystals that form on clear nights) on the snow surface -
variable size- 3-6mm.
It sounds like this is a widespread layer, and as it is currently snowing
lightly in town, likely hidden and protected. The good news is that it is
overlying fairly soft snow and didn't have a chance to grow too large, but
still something to keep in mind in the future as snows accumulate over it.
Have a great holiday season and may your New Year be a fluffy one!
Cheers,
Scott Davis
