Skied some chutes on the north side of Raft Mountain yesterday in the South
Cariboos.
Rd 80 only driveable to just past Silvertip Falls.
Snowline is around 1600 m, a bit higher on direct south aspects. Still
excellent coverage in the ski zone here, with around 2.0 m of a "mostly"
homogenous snowpack at 1900m and good boot pack conditions. A couple
centimeters of new snow on Saturday night made for smooth spring skiing.
One size 3 slab avalanche on a large fan, N asp, looked about a week old,
slab fractured about 40 cm down then stepped to ground, filled up the creek
drainage below with deep debris including freshly shed car size boulders.
150m wide X 300m long. Evidence of this gave me pause to ski similar slopes
at this elevation and aspect do to the fact it started as a mid-pack
slab. Cornices still hanging in there and a few wet loose slides from the
recent new snow, to size 1.5 in steep skiable, running far on the crust.
So, skiing conditions are still favorable with a solid overnight freeze.
