Although sometimes called the Black Prince Traverse, we thought Smith-Dorrien Traverse more apt as it traverses just east of the mountain's entire length.
All west facing aspects above the Spray Road are looking decidedly bare of snow, spring has definitely sprung up there. Last night only a weak freeze 10cm deep, then isothermal deeper in the snowpack up to 2200m . Fortunately, thin high cloud and light-moderate SE winds kept the snow surface cool and supportive. Travel was quick & easy so we had no difficulties attaining either col where we recorded temps of +6. Ski crampons were useful.
Unfortunately the downhill skiing wasn't very good as a thin breakable crust was present (from at least 2450m down). We didn't want to wait for conditions to soften & risk wallowing out Murray Creek. We didn't wallow, but were at the road by noon. Much later and wallowing would certainly have ensued. We skiied off Hero Col as all of the steeper, longer lines off the summit of Hero Knob have avalanched and are quite rugged with debris.
The world was falling down as we drove away, lots of moist-wet avalanches running on all solar aspects.
