[MCR] Little Howse Peak

Public Mountain Conditions Report mcr at informalex.org
Tue Apr 15 16:29:26 EDT 2014

Parks Canada forecasters did a trip to Little Howse Peak today near
Chephren Lake.

Weather:
High overcast turning into light flurries midday, very little accumulation.
Temperatures hovered around -3 at 2300m.

Avalanche activity:
No new avalanche activity observed in the area we travelled. There was
evidence of previous wet and loose avalanches up to size 2 from the last
major warming spell on solar aspects. Because of less than predicted snow
accumulation and cool temperatures we rated todays avalanche danger at
three times low.

Ski conditions:
Generally, travel conditions are excellent. There was a supportive
melt/freeze crust on all aspects except true north today. Crossing lakes
was surprisingly pleasant with a bit of double poling. Ski crampons seemed
crucial on steep due west aspects, however, a little athletic boot packing
would be an option as well. A real mix of breakable crust and boot top
soft snow on the descent to Chephren Lake. The scenery certainly made up
for the lacklustre downhill ski conditions.
