[MCR] Mt Athabasca, August 23, 2015

I guided an ascent of Mt Athabasca up and down the AA Col on August 23.

The recent snowfall accumulation of approximately 30 cm has made the
rubble on the AA Col route less tedious, but has also formed windslabs
on lee features. Six people who climbed the Silverhorn on Aug 23
triggered a slab and were carried down 30 metres. They were fortunate
they didn't go further than that. On the same day, a party of four
turned back from the Ramp route on Mt Athabasca when they encountered
windslab. Furthermore, a size 2 slab has cut out of the steep ice face
below the AA Col next to Mt Andromeda.

Steep ice routes on lee features should be avoided for a while.
