Visitor Safety teams climbed the NW Ridge of Sir Donald and the W Ridge of
Mt Tupper today.
The NW Ridge of Sir Donald is dry and in great shape. Light boots and an
ice axe were necessary for kicking steps on the access to the Uto - Sir
Donald col and at the bottom of the rappels. Crampons were not needed due
to the warm temperatures but might be needed in those sections if it
freezes. The rest of the route is dry. The W face bypass looked to be in
good condition with one steep snow patch to cross.
Still some snow at the campground but a few tent sites are already dry and
more will be soon. The col sites have snow available for melting if you
stay up there.
Uto is also dry and in good shape. An ice axe is still needed on the
approach and descent.
The west ridge of Tupper is dry and getting lots of traffic. The approach
is in mid-summer condition with only a few snow patches left on the way up
to the ridge. No crampons/iceaxe were needed but boots were nice to have
with high melt water levels and slushy snow. The Hermit campground is
mostly snow free and the tent platforms are all melted out. The Tupper
Glacier is already showing bare patches and schrund on the S face of Mt
Rogers is beginning to sag.
The McDonald decent is melting out fast with snow to the bottom of the
Herdman Couloir and patchy snow below that - see photo.
