Spent the day skiing in the Callaghan Backcountry yesterday. The skiing quality started off nice with dry but wind pressed snow at ridgeline and lighter snow lower down where the wind effect had been more sporadic. Mid day, the freezing level started to rise rapidly and a constant light drizzle ensued. By the time we left, temperatures were well above freezing at 2000m and the top 10-15cm of snow had become rain soaked with a thin crust on the surface.
We saw evidence of a natural avalanche cycle up to size 3 from Friday's storm but most of the debris was already covered over. There we extensive buried windslabs near ridges and on exposed moraines.
