The shape and style of an engine's classification lights had no bearing at
all on the colors displayed, whether freight or passenger.  No lights,
scheduled train; white light, extra train; green light, a following section
is behind.  Simple.  And certainly, corresponding flags had to be displayed
in daylight, no matter what engine or type of service (if, of course, white
or green flags were required by the particular running rights of that
train).  The lights (which were nearly impossible to see in daylight) were
for the night.
