Richard Prince's book "Norfolk & Western Railway, Pocahontas Coal Carrier" is
an excellent source for information concerning N&W steam locomotives.

Info looks better is a spread sheet. One entry for each number of the
locomotive.

good info in there about the 2-8-0s...Mike

Those 4 were the survivors of the G class, as they had gone to the Virginia-
Carolina in 1917 instead of being scrapped. N&W got them back with the V-C
in 1920 and found work for them. N&W had plenty of 2-8-0s in other classes,
but the ones to survive to 1938 were some of the W2 class built in
1901-1905, though 12 older W1s also survived as class W6 0-8-0Ts.
There are several books with N&W steam roster info; the least expensive and
easiest to find is "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives" from Kalmbach.
That one has about 4 pages of text and a N&W Rail*way* roster for about $30.
Next up is "N&W: Giant of Steam" by Lewis Jeffries, printed in 1980 and
selling in the neighborhood of $75. This one covers N&W steam roster and
design, and a has little bit of electric, diesel, and turbine thrown in.
Last up is "Norfolk & Western Railway: Pocahontas Coal Carrier" by Richard
Prince, also printed in 1980. Being a Prince book, you'll pay through the nose
for a copy ($200-300 on average), but he covers N&W locomotives of the 1800s
unlike the other two books, and also has a good deal of operations info.

the G classes that where utilized by the N&W as well as a few predesesor
lines. also listed are the three that survived and are on display today.
