Richard,
I guess you were the one I'd heard of that had a signal restored. I knew someone else had one, but I didn't know who. I just remember hearing someone had one near their driveway.
When I obtained my signal equipment, it was no easy process. I wrote Bob Auman in Roanoke and he told me they didn't donate "outmoded" items to individuals. I wrote back and told him I'd seen many "outmoded" items at railroads shows and such. Since I was "sure?" their was a way to legally obtain these types of items, I only wanted the opportunity to do the same. I also apologized for the misunderstanding, and I told him I intended to purchase what I wanted. And so I did. I got lucky though, because they didn't make me buy a whole gon load. They sold me the one next to my father in law's house and set it in his yard when they took it down. I dismantled it and took most of it home in my pickup truck. The case is still there at his house waiting for me to get it, which I intend to do shortly. (Now, whenever anybody asked me how I "stole" it, and they have more than once, I went inside and got my framed receipts for all my stuff and showed them. The next person who accuses me
of stealing this thing is going to get this framed receipt broken over their head! :)

We were able to save a total of nine signals, relay cabinets, and parts from the Shenandoah Division. I might add that they were purchased, not liberated, from Norfolk Southern in 1997.
The Nace, VA signal was the only one removed locally that was not disassembled in the process by NS. It came down as one piece. This signal is currently resting in my back yard while waiting for a new home. It is for sale. I would have restored it for my driveway but I have already restored a signal that came from somewhere in West Virginia. This one was also legally acquired from NS. This signal was completely disassembled, sandblasted, repainted and rewired before it was installed along my driveway about 10 years ago. I can honestly say that it was a tremendous amount of work!
The parts are still here to reassemble several of the signals. Some have already been sold.
All together we were able to salvage about 23 tons of signal equipment.
Thanks!
